I'm curious about what the shot was too....so I can make a list of no-no's for my vet. We're having our boy neutered in the next month and I want to make sure I know what I'm getting into. I hate that I have to worry about that. A vet should know what is best for my dog, and it's weird to me that I might have to request that he not use certain meds on him. He went to vet school, I didn't. Why doesn't he know all this already!?

The most important thing to request (or DEMAND) is NO ACE. Acepromazine is the most commonly used sedative/tranquilizer in veterinary medicine, and it has also been reported to cause serious bradycardiac effects in boxers, including death. There have been enough serious cases regarding the use of Acepromazine in boxers to necessitate a veterinary warning (see the Acepromazine sticky at the top of the Health Issues forum). HOWEVER, many vets do not heed this warning, often claiming that they have "never had a problem" with the drug, and some vets even are unaware of the warning. After you have spoken to your vet about the use of ACE in boxers, if you have ANY suspicion that your vet may still use ACE on your dog even after listening to your concerns, then is the time to find a new vet. It is not worth risking your dog's life, period... the vet should feel the same way.

The second on the "no-no list" is Rimadyl, which is an NSAID often prescribed post-surgery for pain relief. This drug has a very bad rep for causing serious liver damage and death. If "No Rimadyl" is not specific enough for your vet you can request Tramadol for post-op pain relief. It is a much safer alternative to Rimadyl.

They put my pit on Rimadyl after a tumor removal. It took 3 doses to realize that the seizures were caused by the Rimadyl and was put on tramadol instead. Seizures stopped.

Rimadyl is a terrible drug and so many dogs have a reaction. I'm really not sure why it's even prescribed at all. Along with ACE, what VET who has any updated knowledge keep it in their cabinets at all? I just don't understand.

Drug approval processes scare me.......even more so in the vet business.

Roxy has an appointment today....( I think she has kennel cough now) and I will find out about the shot. Now, looking back, I really do think it was the Rimadyl that made her sick to her stomach. I will post later about the shot.
