rope toys issue?

I wanted to add to this too.

We almost lost Samson one time because of him swallowing a knotted sock that we gave to him as a toy. I will not go into details (to save on space here), but it was a very scary 8 day episode. It took many months for him to gain his weight back (12 pounds).

After the incident with Samson, we cleared the house of any fabric toy that Samson or Delilah could ingest. All rope toys, because of my near-heartbreak with Samson, were tossed out. We allowed some of the toys to stay and be played with, only with supervision. To this day, we are very careful with selecting a toy. Dogs can swallow certain cloth-type items very quickly, even when you are in the same room...so be aware.

Not a good toy at all. When our boxer was a pup, we had a rope toy, after a day or two, I threw that rope toy in the trash.

Treat you fur-babies like perpetual 2 year olds!

I have also learned this lesson the hard way and spent way too much money on vet bills with my 3rd boxer Zoe who also loved to undo the knots. We do have a solid rope tug of war toy that Mia & Rocky like to play with but only when myself or my husband is there to watch. As soon as we come inside the toy goes on the top shelf of the shed. As soon as the toy begins to show signs of wear we toss it and get a new one. We have also treated the rubber or nylon toys the same as Mia is a very aggressive chewer and will go at a toy until it is laying in pieces.

I am so glad someone brought this all to light! I threw them out along time ago after noticing Angel trying to eat them! Not to mention the mess they made all over the place! These are not safe toys! I hope everyone reads this thread!

I am so sorry to hear the reports from members who have experienced the issues with their precious boxers.

I do give my guys rope toys but only under supervision. For that matter, there's only a select few toys that I leave available for them while we're not home - the tough, durable, non hazardous ones like the kong or some rubbery type tug toys and balls made of the same type of material

I had always been concerned about them ingesting pieces of rope and often run to pull strings from their mouths, but never had even thought something so terrible could happen!

Definitely gives me an increased sense of awareness, and now we will be even more cautious!

I threw Roxy's rope toys in the trash today too! I'm glad this was posted because she was chewing on them! I'm so glad nothing happened to her. I love this site. One more boxer safe from the rope toys!

How ironic that this thread was near the top of the list! I just--literally, before I sat down at the computer--made a HUGE rope that was given to the boys "disappear" because I was just too uncomfortable with them having it. After reading that old thread months ago, I became very selective about what is in the toy box, too.

OK- what about Nylabones? Should they be thrown out once a pup starts scraping up the material it is made of? Is the material hazardous to them?

Another rope toy in the trash ... I have been hiding it and only letting him play with it for a few minutes at a time because it started to fray. Now, it's just going "bye bye". Back to Petsmart for more toys!!

Out they go

I just called my husband after reading this thread and told him to gather all the ropey toys and throw them away. Of course, he starts his "but they love them soooo much...". This time though, I said "don't argue with me about this, just do it". He did. Thanks for the info.....
