When we rescued our one year old boxer it was obvious that I, the female, is who he predominantly listens to. He immediately took a liking to me more and bonded with me because I was home more often. He's extremely smart and picked up on all the commands he's been learning.
At his previous home a male beat him and we were wondering if maybe that is why Hank, our boxer will not listen to my boyfriend. (We live together so it's vital that he does.)
For the past couple of days Hank has been running after me when I leave to go back to work from his afternoon walk. He will NOT heel when Jordan tells him to and you cannot stop him. He's solely focused on finding me. Jordan does not want to physically reprimand him because of his past owner and abuse but at the same time doesn't want him running away and getting lost and/or getting hit by a car! Help!!!!

Sounds like you worked on a lot of things with Hank to get him to where he is with you, in the short time. Its not something that transfers over to everyone in Hanks life (the listening to commands). I really believe there needs to be a bond, trust, practice. I also think that while the past can for sure affect the way the dog behaves/reacts sometimes we worry about the past too much. When you say 'heel', you mean while on leash walking? or off leash? How does he run after you once you leave the house out the front door? I think you need to do whatever is safest for sure, if that means taking it slow, keeping him on leash for now, etc. Encourage Hank to listen instead of punishing him for not listening imo. If he listens to you, are you able to help your bf by reinforcing what hes asking of Hank and not rewarding what you don't want (such as the clinging to you)? To me commands are commands. Sometimes they are a neat trick, sometimes its allows you more freedom with/from the dog.. bonds are more meaningful. How old is Hank?

Thanks

He was one.
Last night he was with Jordan replacing a friends shower and his friend and son came through the door and Hank shot out and Jordan ran after him for about a mile until he just got too far ahead and he had to go back to his truck to look for him. I came as soon as I could.
We looked until we thought we were going to get lost in the woods and fields.
We got up at six this morning to look again.
We found him by the highway and buried him this morning.
I feel like the worst owner on the planet, sick and sad and I wish I could have done more. I don't know how I'll ever get over it... I was so in love with him for the little time I had him.

OMG...how heartbeaking! I am so sorry for your loss ='( We have a year old boy we rescued recently as well & he ran out the front door a few nights ago...scared me to death! He wouldn't come when called either, but fortunately he only ran 2 houses over & I was able to retrieve him while he was visiting the neighbors boxer thru the fence.

Again, I'm so sorry for you, your bf, & especially for Hank ~

So Sorry

I am sorry to read this- and offer my condolences.
My boxer has run out the door= a week ago, actually- and I was terrified as to what could happen, because so many things could happen. You're not the worst- please don't think so.
I am sorry for Hank, and you and your boyfriend.

This is the most horrible thing I have ever read. This is honestly my worst fear when it comes to my dogs. I fear this more than any illness they are prone to. This is just so random, and it could happen to anyone.

Sweet Hank will run free at Rainbow Bridge with all our other babies who did not stay long enough in this world. I know you and Jordan must be devastated. And remember that in the short time he was with you, you saved him from a terrible life and let him have his last days with good, loving people.
