There's a number of companies out there running a new style of cleaning called "Empowered Water" its absolutely amazing, I've seen first hand it use and ability to clean stains I thought were never going to come out. The magic returning stain and everything. That being said, if you can work a deal with him to try that first and then if anything comes back replace it that may work.
Otherwise, I'm not sure where you are pricing carpet replacement, but damn a 400+ difference seems like an awful lot to me. I've replaced carpet in a number of rooms before and it has never cost me more than 250.
