Replace carpet necessary after a couple of accidents?

Hello,

I've been renting a room from a friend for the past 8 months and my boxer has had a couple of #2 accidents in it. I cleaned them up at most 2 or so hours after they occurred with carpet cleaning products. There aren't any stains and when I move out shortly, I plan to have a professional carpet cleaner come in here with those professional steam cleaners they have and further clean the carpet.

My friend however wants the entire carpet replaced, saying there's stuff growing under the carpet that will not be cleaned by the steam cleaner.

The difference in cost between new carpet and steam cleaning by a professional is about $400-500.

If he's right and steam cleaning really doesn't do enough then I'll pay for the new carpet, but I'd like to hear from some people with experience if that's really necessary.

Thanks.

I don't know about things that grow underneath, but if you value the friendship, I'd just replace the carpet. He's not going to be happy until you do.

I don't think a #2 accident warrants replacing the carpet, unless it was a serious case of diarrhea. If it was normal solid poop than steam cleaning will more than clean any areas in question.

With that said, I have to agree with Althea, sounds like he won't be happy unless you replace the carpet.

Heh thanks but I understand the friendship aspect, I'm more so looking for objective advice regarding the actual bacteria growth or whatever else would be a legitimate cause for replacing the room's carpet.

One time was some rather not so solid stuff because he was sick.

Another option might be to get the carpet professionally cleaned offsite, replace the pad and re-install. My in-laws did this years ago in their living room and the carpet looked brand new again. It'll depend on whether or not there is anyone in your area who offers that type of service.

If he had one of those really messy days, then yes, it probably got into the pad and possibly onto the floor underneath. Is that area near the door (or at least an edge of the room)? If so, you may be able to pull it up and take a look to see if there is staining on the pad.

i just got my carpet cleaned professional. I live in a townhouse. I asked the man myself if he thought i needed to have the carpet replace due to accidents from my dog. I have lived here 4 years. My husband cleans the carpet atleast once a month himself. I was told by the professional himself, that the carpet didnt need to be replaced. I hope this helps you.

just shampoo the spot with a rented steam cleaner,if that doesnt suffice, you dont need a friend like that anyway, its far to shallow in my opinion, hasnt this guy ever owned a dog before?or for that matter, had a child that had an accident?

When Thor was little he had an accident in the middle of our living room. I cleaned it up immediately. The stain came back. I had the carpet steam cleaned and evenually the stain came back. The problem was even though the carpet was clean the pad underneath wasn't. So unfortunately, unless he has one of the newer upgraded pads (antimocrobial, moisture blocking pads) I would say you need to replace the carpet and pad.

sorry - but i to have to agree ~~ we have had the " problem " of magic reappearing stains before ... pulled the old carpet out - and was all the way to the wood floor. just after only 1 - 2 accidents.

do what u feel is right -just remember - karma is a nasty thing when ur on the wrong end of it !! :) :)

hope it all works out !

Replace carpet necessary after a couple of accidents? Reply to Thread

Absolutely Not! I have housebroken more than one boxer and they have all had more than a couple accidents. The carpet can be cleaned with a commercial steam cleaner easily. There is also a product called "Nature's Miracle" that can be purchased at any pet store that renders all pet soilings inert. It sounds to me like he might be trying to take you but that's just my opinion. Good luck.
