Boxer Pal
HI to All,
i just wanted to share my sad news today about my Sarah (5yr old flashy fawn) she had been incontinent alot more than usual and drinking more water than usual. she has had a leaky faucet for 2yrs but somrthing seemed wrong. took her to the vet on tuesday with a urine sample and her concentration is very dilute( specific gravity 1.012 for any medical personnel). she has some bacteria in it so she started antibiotics and i thought it was a cystitis. she had labs drawn and all the results today point to early kidney failure:( I cannot believe it. Nothing they can do except put her a special kidney food from the vet by eukanaba. can give her fluid boluses later SQ if needed. the vet did not know how long she would have...some go fast and others not. Her labs are abnormal but not terribly high. the prognosis is not good. i feel sick. I lost my last boxer Cleo at 7 from lymphoma. what is it with this breed??? I love them so much, but it is heartbreaking. I will still have Mandy(brindle age 11!!) who is as strong and healthy as a bull. My husband said no heroic measures and no more dogs. I feel so sad.. All you do from now on is look at them and wonder how long they have. I am not telling my kids until she becomes more symptomatic. they will be crushed. I would love to hear from anyone anyone with any experience with kidney failure in a boxer or info on the diet. thanks.

I do not have any advice or experience dealing with Kindney Failure but I do want to offer you my support in dealing with Sarah's illness.

First, (((((((vibes))))))) to your fur baby and your family.

Growing up we had a miniture Schnauzer (spelling?) and as she got older her kidneys started to go. She never had a leaking problem, but the vet did put her on the food your vet put Sarah on and she was on that food for 2 1/2 years before she passed (she passed on an unrelated health issue). So they can react VERY well to the food. Please try and keep positive. I will keep you and Sarah in my thoughts.

Thanks Gina and Memphis....
That is the only positive thing that I heard today. the vet sounded so ominous. i will just do the right thing with the food. I do not understand how it can affect a dog so young. thanks for the support.

I am sorry to hear this but don't give up hope. With the right diet and SQ fluids she may do well for a long time. Our first boxer developed Kidney failure when he was older, and he did really well with diet and fluids, it was lymphoma that got him in the end not the kidneys.

But you do need to be very careful with a dog with kidney problems that they don't get dehydrated. If they ever have really bad prolonged diahrea or throwing up get them to the vet and on IV fluids immediately before their values go crazy.

Sending good vibes to you and Sarah
