Raw-Hide Bones vs. Nyla-Bones

We gave our puppy (5 months) her first raw hide bone last week and she LOVED it! She sat there for hours saturday night and chewed. But then she started choking on the peices, after removing the third piece of rawhide that she was litteraly choking on I took the bone away from her. A couple days after that I got her a Nyla-Bone (peanut butter flavour) and she loved that as well. But after a few hours she started throwing up! So again I took the bone away for a few days. I gave it to her in her crate one morning and when I came home for lunch she had thrown up all her crate.

So whats the deal? She's a baby and obviously needs goodies and things to chew, but these items dont seem to be sitting well with her. People are telling me that we arnt supposed to be feeding raw-hide bones to dogs anymore (they arnt good for them?), but if thats true why do they sell them by the hundreds at pet stores??? What should I give her that will sit well with her stomach and not get caught in her throat? I cant handle the real bones that they sell in the stores because the sound that the dogs teeth make on it make my spine shiver!!!! I would appreciate some ideas!!!

Thanks!!

Hello: In my opinion I don't give my boxer rawhides, I did when she was a pup. Too scary, choking on them, etc. I don't feel they are safe at all. We are happy with Nylabone's but the DURABLE kind, not the edible. Never, ever had a problem.

I give both my pups rawhide bones - but ONLY with supervison. Even at ages 1 and 2 years, they still choke sometimes. Evie & Adam just love the rawhide.

We don't give rawhide, although they gave Willis one at puppy class and he loved it (I didn't give my permission for him to have it ) Our breeder told us to not give him rawhide because of choking hazard and digestive problems. Plus, I have heard they are covered in all kinds of tanning chemicals.

Willis has had his durable nylabone for 2 months and barely made a dent on it. He loves it! And no tummy upset because nothing comes off of it. Great chew toy!!!

So are there both non-edible and edible Nyla-bones? the one we got her was obviously edible and she ate 1/2 of it before she got sick. I'm heading to the store tonight to see if I can find durable ones!

Yes you can buy the hard plastic and rubber type Nylabones but they do still chew off pieces sometimes so watch for that. They are good though. Another good chew treat is Bully sticks. It's fully digestible and they love them. They also don't make messes like rawhide does. It's a bull penis dried like jerky and cut into sections. You can buy them for a decent price on ebay and online stores. My dogs love them and have had no problems with them. Just take it away when it's small enough to be swallowed whole. They are one of the safer doggy chew treats i have found upon research.

I get Harley the Bimple Bones. They are edible, but do not crack or splinter and the pieces that do come off are like small little grains (so, no choking hazard). Harley LOVES these. They have little bumps on them to massage their gums etc.

Bimple Bones

This is the PetsMart page for them... I always got a size larger than what I thought was big enough for Harley, now I just get him the largest size.

"Durable" Nylabones?

We had what we thought was a durable Nylabone for Boss on the Rescue's recommendation. He chewed it for about, oh, 2 days before it got pointy little spikes on the one knob. My dad says he noticed blood on the bone "spikes" (I didn't see any) so he took Boss' Nylabone away. The one we had gotten was for aggressive/frequent chewers. I thought I had read that those little spikes that raise, as long as they're not too sharp, will help to floss and massage a dog's gums. Any truth to that, or is it back to the old drawing board to find something for our boy?

rawhides good, but greenies better

I've tried both the rawhides and the nylabones. It didn't make a difference if the nylabone was durable or not...they were chewed to pieces, quickly. I quite feeding the flat rawhides because Jasmine would get the whole thing soggy before trying to eat it, yuck! I've now switched the natural rawhides that are shaped in as a stick. It is about 1/4" diameter and abut 6" long. It keeps the doggies busy for about 15 min. One real great treat I like to give are the greenies. They LOVE them.

We do greenies as well, but htey are pricey. We also love nyla-bones and kongs for chewing...very durable. We never do rawhides, but my parents still give them to my dogs. We do surpervise and I throw them out as soon as they are flexible. My parents are slowly coming around tot he dangers of rawhide, but are flat out cheap when it comes to dog treats.
