Raw bones

So I went to the local supermarket to try to find Roscoe a raw bone to chew on. I inquired on BW awhile ago as to what type of bones to ask for, and I was told that a lot of times they are called "soup bones" or something to that effect :) I asked the guy at the meat counter if they had any raw bones or soup bones and he told me if he did they would be in the miscellaneous meat sections. I go over there and find the bones labeled "soup bones" and they are still covered in meat and fat. Is this normal? Am I supposed to buy these and then cut all the meat and fat off and then give it to Roscoe? I knew I was supposed to scrape the marrow out, but I wasnt thinking there was going to be stuff on them too. Sorry if I sould a little silly asking these questions

Don't scrape the meat off ;) That's the best part. Soup bones are indeed meant to have some meat and fat left on them - that's how they flavour soup. Taking some of the marrow out, on the other hand, is a good idea. Not every last bit - it's wonderfully nutritious stuff. But just some, because too much is too fatty.

Roscoe's not used to eating raw meat, will this upset his tummy? I should probably put him in his crate to chew on it though, looks like it could get pretty messy!!!

Well, anything is possible. But it isn't very likely that the raw meat will upset him. If, on the other hand, there are large amounts of fat on the bone, it could be worth trimming a bit of that off. No need to get every last bit or anything like that - but just excess that comes off easily. The remainder - the bits that are hard to get off - are going to help clean his teeth and gums as he chews :)

Certainly giving it to him in crate can be a good idea though. Much tidier, and it gives him privacy to chew away in a relaxed manner.

Mine always go to their crate when they have raw bones. I just don't want them getting into it about the bones. They love them. In fact, raw bones with a little meat and fat are the only chew things my two get. I use to give them bully sticks but I am too afraid they will swallow them.

 I had the same reaction the first time I saw them too.

Re: where to feed? I though I was being very clever by putting down a blanket in the family room and giving Remy her bone to chew while on the blanket.

Apparently, a rocket scientist I am not. I didn't realize that she would move around with the bone! I'm the idiot who followed her around for the next hour, repeatedly putting her and the bone back on the blanket.

interjecting some raw feeding experience here. feeding large bones from cows can lead to broken teeth, so be careful. with puppies i guess it could be ok, cause if he breaks a tooth then he will get his adult teeth anyway. i have been feeding raw to all of my dogs for 2 years now. in my experience, the best bones for puppies and teething are pork neck bones. not a whole lot of fat and some meat. the marrow in the bones can and probably will cause runny poo, it does even in my dogs that are adjusted to raw meat all the time. atticus really liked his first neck bone today:o) it has been my experience that raw fed puppies chew on things far less, IMO they wear themselves out eating! oh, and one word of caution, the marrow will stain your carpet, i never found anything to get it out, so a crate is probably in order.

My boys have always had marrow bones given with a bit of meat left on them. I have never had an issue with broken/chipped teeth, upset tummies, or runny poop. I guess it all depends on the dog but both of mine tear up far less of my house with a couple bones a week. We can't live without them :)

I think raw bones are the best! I wouldn't give my dog anything else to chew on. I have heard of the teeth breaking though, that's pretty scary.
