Hi all...I want to go out and buy some Benadryl to have on hand for when Joe comes home. I performed a search and found the dosage is 1mg per pound up to twice a day in a 24 hour period. My questions are should I buy liquid or pills? If liquid is easier to use, do I buy childrens or adults, and are the dosages the same? Thanks in advance for any help.

I found the little gel caps they come in were easier than the liquid. I ended up with more liquid on the floor than in the dogs mouth. Then I also accidently choked her once SO.. they have gel caps that are small and very easy to hide in anything I would do those instead. That way there is no mess.

I have never tried liquid only pills. The ones I got were the smaller than average size and they worked great. A girl at my work was having trouble getting her dog to take the larger size and she tried the ones I had which worked for her as well. :)

Pills are what I use - I think you can control the dose better and see if they actually get it all in their mouth (and down their throat!)

Same here. I put both pills on the back of his tongue at the same time (they're tiny and so easy to dose) and he never knew what hit him.

Just a note on dosing, 1 mg/lb 2X daily - but max at 50 mg each dose.

Our 11 month old baby, Jack is 70 lbs. He swallowed a bee and had hives all over. The vet that we took him to had us give him 3 gelcaps every 12 hours for 3 days. I hid them in a hot dog.. no problems. It took him 3 days or so for the swelling to go down but he is fine now.

Just FYI, the generic is called Diphenhydramine. Generally much cheaper than regular benedryl. Also make sure it's PLAIN benedryl w/ no other decongestants or other stuff that could be bad for the pup.
