Another personal tidbit
Ikaika and Mailani are on a "need to" basis on the barking. I live alone so I wanted them to bark, alerting me to what is going on outside. They got used to the neighbors and don't bark at them anymore, but their guests are a different story. All I do is go to the door or window and let them know it's ok.
Sometimes (really late at night) it can be disturbing to my sleep. But overall I would rather they alert me to something or someone that might be harmful, than sleep.
I live in a big city and police sirens, fire sirens and such are going off all the time. They don't bark at those sounds.
People are generally afraid of coming into my apartment without me there, unless Ikaika and Mailani are on a first name basis with them. There are a few friends that feel extremely comfortable with them. Strangers they would rather not walk in without me. The apartment complex personnel and maintenance do not come in without informing me first. They are afraid of them (mainly because of their size, and Ikaika's "big boy" bark). I like it that way. I don't have to worry about anyone invading our space.
I decided on this breed because of their temperment and size. No one but those who know of the breed understand that they are just big 'ol babies at heart.
Like I told my mother. No one is going to be afraid of an ankle biter (little 20 lb or less, ogs). But when you hear two big boy and girl barks you might think twice about entering the apartment. :D
