Question(s) about barking

We have an 8 1/2 month old male, neutered Boxer puppy. He will bark and growl at me if he wants to play or is getting antsy from being bored.

Otherwise, if Otis is barking, it's because there is someone at the door, someone is outside, something is going on that is out of the norm, my neighbor's dog is outside, the kids on the next street over are playing in their yard, or the dog a couple of houses up is outside and barking at him, etc.

Basically, he will bark to let us know that something is up that is not normal. I think as the temperature warms up and the kids and neighbors are outside more, it will be more normal for him and he won't bark as much...I hope. Usually, Otis is pretty quiet.

My kids are 7 1/2 and 11 years old and they all play really well together. Otis is great when all the cousins gather at our house to play (ages 5 - 14). He just loves those days!!! But even with all the kids there playing with him, he didn't make one sound except for his play growl and woo-woo (Chewbacca) songs.

I agree with Krikkit on a lot of points.

I would not say the breed is a barking breed. Elvis usually only barks if the door bell rings or out of bordom or frustration.
Daxx on the other hand never barks. I have only heard hiim a few times.
Evlis does sing, but thats no annoying at all, more on the cute side.

We got Allie when she was a puppy. She never made a sound, except growling when playing. We rescued Vincent when Allie was 6 months, Vincent was a little over a year at the time. Neither of them ever barked. We lived in a house in S.C., then when my husband got orders to San Antonio, TX we lived in a horrible one bedroom apt. until our house in S.C. sold. They never barked, even in the apt. complex. Well, we moved into a house and some friends from S.C. moved here also. They had one boxer at the time. They've since rescued a boxer mix that barks and barks. So now our two have learned how to bark. They bark when they're outside and there is activity on the other side of the fence. The male barks in the house only if he hears the doorbell, or that dang Dominoes commercial with the doorbell in it. Also, they've never howled, like at sirens or other high-pitched noises.

 

[Scrapper's Mom]

Scrapper only barks when you are too slow to pick up the frisbee he has brought back for you to throw again. He never barks when he sees or hears things, though he does go on "alert" and has given a deep rumbling growl on a couple of occasions when something was not right to him.

Evie & Adam are usually pretty quiet. They always bark when someone is on our property. Occassionally, they will bark if they feel they are being ignored or they want the cat to run so they can give chase. But, since I have 2, they bark at each other during rough play. It has never been the annoying dog that barks all the time at everything kinda bark.

Riley doesnt bark at strangers. I wish he did.
The only time he barks, is when he is very excited during play. Or when he wants my attention, to play. Like if I have a guest over, and I am carrying on a conversation.... HE BARKS AT ME!
Or if I sit down to watch Oprah, HE BARKS! it was really a problem when we first got him... and it took about 3 weeks to get a handle on that. Now he only barks when I talk to a person at my house... then I throw him outside. If we are barbequing, its really a problem, cause usually I will hold his jaw ( not hard. I am just trying to comunicate no barking. it works for inside) and tell him NO BARKING. but outside, I cant catch him. he runs from me. when I tell him to sit, he sits, right up till I get an inch from him, then he TAKES OFF! and then barks when I try to carry on a conversation. of coarse, he has his toy at my feet when he is barking... he just wants to play.

Hi tommykins, We dont have many sirens at all by us. But I have to say I think Buster WOULD bark like crazy if one startled him.

We have a big dining room window which Gracie looks out, and will give a quick bark for each person or dog she sees.

My boxer Joe only barks when someone is at the door or wants to play. Most of the time they have to knock for him to bark.
