question on pup prices.....

$1800 for a show potential pup in NJ is quite reasonable, provided the contract isn't outrageous. Sounds like you chose well. I do want to add that just because someone breeds a lot of dogs and finishes a lot of them, that does not mean they have a "great reputation" among their peers in the show world. It simply means that they breed a lot of dogs and finish a lot of them. Sometimes that type of person can have a "great reputation" among their peers - but you really need to ask their peers about it, not their friends or their puppy buyers or the people who breed to their stud dogs. It's amazing sometimes to find how different the opinions of the "show world" and the "non-show world" are.

Ive heard many people talk of these so called contracts with breeders.I own my pups with no strings attached.The only agreement i have with my breeder is that i wont stud my dog to a bitch that doesnt meet his approval and that is verbal and was my idea because i dont want to be the one that ruins a line.I dont know how to breed and i dont pretend too.I wouldnt know what to look for in a pedigree,so i chose this over doing it on my own and pretending to be a breeder.

PS. the one thing i noticed about reputations off breeders in the show world is that not many have anyhting good to say about one another.This is just my experiance with being involved with the show world.
But i chalk that up to plain old (knock the competition)(or cut down the guys on top)Ive heard alot off bs about a few breader that have some great dogs and i just dont think its fair to knock anyone and as you know Julie there is only one breeder that is considered to have a pure american boxer line and that comes from a top organization.(but i will confirm that for everyone so please dont attack the comment.)The only thing i need to confirm is the organization the other part is confirmed.Any way i think we shouldnt knock any one here,the breeders or the people who purchase from them weather we paid 500 or 5,000,the bottom line is we all love our dogs.On that note i say good luck to all the boxer lovers out there.

For a male, an example of an outrageous contract would be that the breeder (seller) gets to use the dog on any bitch he wants, at any time, for free, for the dog's entire life. That would be outrageous even on a dog placed for free, but certainly moreso on a dog that has been paid for.
And yes, there is quite a bit of politicking and backbiting among breeders - but when you get the same opinion from a large number of breeders, you're likely hearing more truth than 'jealousy'. Most breeders that I have talked to will acknowledge another breeder that is deserving of a great reputation, and have no problem being beaten by a good dog.
What is your experience in the show world? (That sounds challenging, and it's not meant to.)

Thank you Julie. This is partially where I became aware of what had happened to me. As for verbal contracts, my breeder did not keep his end of the contract so another lesson learned. NEVER trust someone who will only give you a "verbal" agreement. It may not be binding.

:( I made the mistake of buying a puppy from backyard breeders. I fell for the whole bit. Add in the paper, and also at stores. I payed $500 for him, and physically he was beautiful. But He died of seizures at 10 mo old. 850 to 1000 dollars is well worth my time and emotions. Please don't buy a coupon dog. If we weren't going to breed them in the future, and I wanted a bargain buy boxer, I would open my home to a rescue dog. Don't support bad breeders. Please

Around here in the Georgia area, prices vary between $250 and $400. IMO, a respectable breeder is not in it for the money and therefore would not be selling to make a profit. I know many respectable breeders who sell their puppies for around $300. Price is not a good judgement of quality. There are many other ways to tell if you are receiving a healthy, well bred boxer.
I got my boxer for 350.00 with papers. I met the breeder and her dogs. I saw all of the awards her dogs won and their heritage papers. It may be because Ohio is more interested in Rottweillers and Dobie's and German Sheps. But we have a great relationship with the breeder and our dog knows his parents well. I think the prices are dependent on where you live and not the healthiness of the dog. I know breeders here in Ohio who try to get 1000.00 for "white rare boxers". The dog never sells. People are well aware that white boxers aren't rare and shouldn't cost anymore. I think its a shame that someone could charge 1000.00 or more for a dog. Ever heard of a puppy mill? I don't trust a breeder who breeds tons of dogs just for the big money. And they breed year after year. I think its a horrible life for a dog. Both of my dogs are fixed and I wouldn't mate them for profit. No wonder there are so many dogs killed each year in shelters. I have found a lot of older female boxers in shelters who got past their prime for breeding and are thrown away like trash.
