Cayenne's Mom

Boxer Insane
Cayenne loved her little brother. Zane was tiny when we brought him home then a week later we had his ears cropped so we had to watch her at all times. Cayenne is very smart and was around my Mom's lab puppy so she sort of knew the ropes. When he was little she would invent games that they could play. Chasing is one of the ones that became popular very quickly. I would supervise the two when they first meet at all times. I also did not feed the two together until Zane was with us for a long time. Cayenne does not think Zane should eat and all the food is for her. I am know dealing with the fact that Zane is going to be a lot bigger than Cayenne and they both have dominant personalities. I try to spend time with each of them seperately and together but they are very much Mommies kids and I can be the cause of tension between them. I usually ignore them and put them in separte crates if it gets out of hand. Luckily it doesn't happen too often. Two are twice the hugs, kisses and love. But two can be destructive.

When I brought Tia (8 weeks at the time) home, I left Sonny(7years) kenneled so I could introduce the new puppy to the house. After about 2 hours of having the puppy home, I took them both to the front yard. They were both very curious of each other and instantly hit it off. Sonny would lay on his back and wiggle around and Tia would be sniffing his face. It was pretty funny. Anyway, after a week or so, it seemed Sonny was getting pretty sick of her. His patience got shorter and I started to worry, I watched her pretty close. It seemed she only wanted to play with Sonny when he was trying to sleep. I started distracting her at those times with toys, etc. Now they get along great! Tia uses Sonny for a pillow at quiet time (right before bed) then during the night they sleep in their own spaces.
Every situation will be different, so I hope this helps. Let us know how it turns out.

We brought Sophia home when Izzy was about 1.5 years. Izzy was a little freaked out. She kept trying to push Sophia with her paw or nose. We had to watch them very closely for the first week or so because Izzy treated Sophia like a toy almost.

Jackson was very tolerant when Karma came into our lives. Karma wanted to show she was boss from the beginning. She was so small she could easily walk under Jackson without touching him, but she would bark at him and snarl to tell him what was up. He just kind of looked at her with interest and when she would be a little much he'd give her a little "box". We tried to make sure to give alot of attention to Jackson to help him feel secure with a new puppy, especially since he was a rescue.

Karma would chew on him all the time, and he just let her do whatever. They play together constantly and share very well. They definately have their distinct personalities. But I can't imagine either of them without the other.

When we brought Marley home at 8 weeks, Justin was about 11 months old. I thought Justin was going to inhale Marley, he sniffed at him so much and so hard. Because of the size difference, we were very careful. Justin loved having Marley, never aggressive, we were just afraid he would accidently hurt Marley.

For the first week or so, we'd have Justin get into a down position and let them play. It was probably a month or so before we really let them play together with no restrictions - we did it with the approval of our vet - we wanted to make sure Marley was big enough. Actually I was a little surprised when she said it was OK cuz Marley still looked so small compared to Justin - but he survived.

Have fun!

We just got our big boy, Bacchus about 1 yr. old, from a rescue about 2 weeks ago. Our Roxy, 15 mos., just loved him immediately. They played all day & still do play constantly. They are so precious together. Roxy does try to be the dominat one. I guess this was her domain before Bacchus. I just adore them!! Sissy lovicon

We had a real challenge intergrating a new puppy into our home. Duke is 7 and isn't accustomed to other dogs. We had his mother until she passed away when Duke was 5, and they played great. I had faith that he could be brought to accept a puppy.

WHen we picked Chloe up we went to a park to intorduce them. Duke lunged at me..I was holding her. It was very scarey. Fortunately my husband had him on a leash. We had planned that chloe would sleep in my daughters room, so that is where we kept her. SHe slept a lot a first, and since it was summer vacation my daughter was home from school this worked. We alternated times that the dogs were out, and would keep them in seperate rooms in the house. We would take them both into the family room and sit with them, first holding the puppy on somone's lap, then as she got older, on a leash. It took a month of this, with Duke slowly becoming less aggressive and more relaxed in her presence. SHe got more confidemt, and we let her off the leash first, and we would pull him back if too aggressive. She became more venturesome and was teasing him becasue he was on the leash, and then we started letting the leash out, and finally let it go so we could grab it if problems.

Now Chloe is 6 mo old, and she is a terror. They play well, but at times she is too much for our old boy. I asked many questions of the people here, and picked up some tips from "The Dog Listener". You have to be committed to wanting to make this work. Someone with lesser committment might have given the puppy back, or got rid of the older dog, but neither was an option. We considered a rescue, but thought bringing in an older dog would be even more difficult.

Getting Along

Hi,

When I brought Rocky and Saddam home for the first time, I was a little concerned too. My male dog Rusty was a tad bit jealous, but got along with them just fine. Since he is older, he really only played a little bit, and would let the puppies know when he had had enough. I was worried about my 5 year old female boxer Casey. I let them outside with her, and, at first there was some tension, but after that they played like crazy!!! Now Rocky and Saddam are over 1 year old and everybody gets along just fine!!! There of course is some jealousy, and each one of them tries to push the other out of the way, but, all in all, they do get along great!!!!

we introduced ours when we took maxx out of the kennel we had jessie out front with mommy as i took maxx outside, he instantly went to her and sniffed her and stood over her to show dominance i guess but he was very gentle with her and now they are inseparable, i wanted to do it at the kennel though because he is used to seeing other dogs there and it wouldnt be a shock to him.

Jazzy was 13 months old when we got Reiko and recovering from a major illness. He really helped her to recuperate, as 8wk old puppies do. We introduced them at the front door and they never looked back. When Katie (rescue) came to live with us she was introduced at the front gate and from then on there were no problems they all settled in together. Emmi was born here so the others watched her grow up, and we closely monitored all play time. Again, no problems. We have always insisted that if it gets too rough we have "time"- where all dogs are put on a down stay until they settle down. Hopefully this will continue to work when our baby comes along-which is any day now.
The other thing that we have always insisted is that when people come to visit they speak to all of the dogs-that way there are no favourites and no noses put out of place.
Goodluck, it takes time and patience but it is well worth all of the effort that you put in.;)
