Hi! Just had a quick question about treats. We have had a hard time finding a treat that Kosmo is motivated by (most of them are too hard for him). He does okay with soft ones but bisquits are spit out.

What does your boxer love?

Has anyone seen/know about treats (available in the bulk bins at my pet store) that look like small bones and seem to be a hard popcorn like material. They kind of smell like popcorn and almost feel like styrofoam. Just wondering if they are healthy (I assume they are made from corn but not sure) cuz I had heard that dogs don't digest corn very well. Kosmo seems to really like them but I don't want to get into a habit if they aren't healthy.

One more question (sorry), does anyone mix cottage cheese into their boxer's food? Heard it was good for coat.

As always, thanks in advance!!:)

 I have not seen these treats you have mentioned. Rocks get different treats for different things. He usually gets cut up fruit or dried fruit pieces for everyday run of the mill things. He gets cut up hotdogs or pepperoni when we are on walks or outside where there are tons of distractions. Better treats with a strong smell is sure to get and keep his attention.

Rocks also loves cottage cheese and it is a great thing to add to food. He gets it about 3times a week. Yogurt is also great. Rocky is also allergic to corn so he does not get anything with corn products in them. Hope that helps you a bit ;)

Thanks Andrea! I can't remember if those treats had a name or not on the bin. I will ask the pet store about them next time I'm there (which seems to be all the time LOL).

How much Cottage Cheese do you feed at a time? I just started giving it to Kosmo mixed into his food and I have been giving about 1 or 1 1/2 tablespoons mixed in his dry food twice a day. Is that too much? He seems to really gobble up his food when its there.

I would stick with 1tablespoon. He is still pretty young so I wouldn't give to much. I give Rocks about two heaping spoon fulls when I am making his supper. So I think that 1tablespoon is a good starting point :D

I'll bet the ones you're talking about that feel like styrofoam are rice cakes. You can buy mini bite-size rice cakes in the grocery store. I use them for Mack sometimes when he is "seriously" dieting.

I too put cottage cheese in my babies food...she loves it!!! :D You might want to try the freeze dried liver treats, not sure what they are called but they come in these plastic container/tubs.

Snacks

Mine loves cottage cheese or yogurt in with the dry food. Also just small pieces of regular food for treats.

They like hard peanut butter biscuts but their absolute favorite and i am sure it probably in snot real healthy but they share 1/2 of a piece every morning when I lockedthem up are canine carryouts that we get from wal-mart. they are soft and have a lot of smell. they break easy into small pieces and really motivate my guys.

Maggiemom- Kosmo likes the Canine Carryouts too! I usually break them up small so that half of one or one gets us through a whole training session or longish walk. They probably aren't great for him but he does like them.

When we are working on a new command or something hard, I use very small pieces of cheese. Kosmo LOVES cheese and will work really hard for it. We don't use it often--just when we need to break out the heavy artillery! :p

I keep reading/hearing about the freeze dried liver snacks... where do you find them??? My pet store says they don't have them and I have no idea what they look like or who makes them.

Thanks to everyone for all the great feedback!
