Nicmicwil--Thanks for the info! I am headed to Petsmart today anyway so I will check them out. Have to get a bell so we can start working on potty signals. ;) Thanks again!!

Well my little Dakota likes - Snausages, Puparoni, Canine Carryouts, Chicken strips and BilJac liver treats.

I ususally take the puparoni or chicken strips and cut them (with scissors) into super small pieces and mix them up into a bag as well as breaking up the other treats - so there is a good mix of treats. She seems to get tired of just one every time.

Plus if they are small they last longer, and you can give more without filling them up too quick.

I might try the cheese or something more intense for outside - she gets pretty distracted and could care less about treats!!

I also heard about the "log" of food that you can cut up into chunks and freeze and put in kongs -- i might try that also.

Well I found the freeze dried liver treats at Petsmart the other day and bought a small can to try out before I dropped $18 on the bigger size. I gave Kosmo a small one just to try them out and he LOVED it!!:p He was so funny--licking the roof of his mouth (like peanut butter or something was stuck to it), sniffing carpet for every last crumb and trying to find more anywhere he could. Now I know what to use for the REALLY hard stuff! Wow. I have to say, I thought they were way too expensive for treats but I think I'll have to go back and get the big container (plus, they will last). Thanks for the reccommendation everyone!

Gracie-- Try the cheese (or the freeze dried liver LOL), I think it will really help with the outside distractions. I saw the "log" at petsmart but have never used it. It looks so gross but then again, I'm not eating it.

At what age do you start using Kongs and if you can use with puppies, what size Kong do you get?? The size for smaller breeds or boxer size and they grow into it?? I almost got one (since I have heard so many great things about them) but was worried that Kosmo was too young and couldn't find the answer on the package.

Barron's trainer used the freeze-dried liver treats (100% pure liver with no additives or preservatives) to reward Barron after doing a command correctly. She cut one cube into a quarter and gave it to him after each command.

Freeze-dried liver treats could be purchased through pet-supply catalogs. Care-A-Lot (www.carealotpets.com) has a 4.2 oz can for $5.49, and a 14-oz. can for $15.99. New England Serum Company (www.NESerum.com) has a 4-oz can for $5.99; a 14-oz can for $18.59, and a 21-oz can for $25.99. They also offer buy 6, get one free.) Doctors Foster & Smith (www.DrsFosterSmith.com) has a 4-oz can for $5.99; 14-oz can for $17.99 and a 21-oz can for $24.00 in lamb liver or chicken liver.)

For commercial treats my baby just loves Benny Bully's dried liver treats. They are 100% pure beef liver and about the only treat she gets really excited about...except maybe when I make homemade liver treats. (Boiled liver sprinkled with garlic powder and placed in the oven for about 1 hour at 350).

She practically does back flips for these!

Ellie Mae's Mama:

Thanks for the recipe for liver treats. Just one question: how long do you boil the liver and do you do it at a rapid boil?
