My poor Isis has pyotraumatic dermatitis! We came home last Thursday and she had scratched herself raw and was bleeding under her neck. I rushed her to the vet (completely upset and crying - me, that is!) and the vet shaved her fur around the area, cleaned it with iodine, gave us antibiotics and told me to give her Benadryl every four hours. I have done all of that and clean it twice a day with iodine, and it is not as moist as it was but it is still itching her and she scratches it when I am not around. The elizabethan collar makes her crazy and stressed so I don't want to use it. I am going to give her a bath tonight with an anti-allergen shampoo to see if that helps her. Any idea how long this takes to heal? She has seasonal allergies which is the cause of this, but it has never been this bad before - Isis is almost 13 years old. My poor baby is going through a rough patch and any advice and/or healing vibes will be appreciated. Thanks!

My Brutus is going to be 5, has an allergy to air (multiple things). He gets hot spots under his front legs, in his armpits. He scratches himself silly till they are blood red. I apply over the counter steroid cream twice a day. Within a few days he is much better. Hope this helps!

What brand is this cream? Isis can't have oral cortisone as it will interact with her Metacam for her arthritis but I am sure a topical cream would work but I will check with the vet first if you give me the brand name. Thanks for the advice!

Just wondering...isn't the benadryl helping at all? My Sable takes two 25 mg tables 3 times a day and it stops her itching.

Benadryl didn't help with my dog either. The vet gives me something, hydro???. I don't have the bottle in front of me, but it works better. Benadryl works when Brutus is having a severe reaction, hives, etc. But not for the general allergy itchy's. I just buy the hydrocortisone cream at the discount store. No particular brand name. Good luck!

Hi there. Yes the Benadryl is helping but the whole area is such a mess that she still tries to scratch occasionally and it is very red and raw. I found the hydrocortisone last night and put it on her. I think she is starting to heal but it will take quite some time to be back to normal, it was a very bad reaction she had. I have never seen her in such a bad state from her allergies! Poor puppy girl. I suppose it will just take time to heal.

So sorry for your baby...I went through this once with a West Highland White Terrior. He was allergic to fleas. Right after I had him groomed he somehow got a flea bite and he scratched and carried on until he had red raw places on himself. I had to take him to the vet, they shaved him down and gave him a shot of somekind that relieved his itching for some time and from then on I kept something on him to protect from fleas. His grooming was money down the drain.

Hope you baby gets to feeling better and healing soon.

After I rub in the hyrdocortisone on Brutus' spots, I have him play a little while. So he doesn't stay so focused and try licking it off. Gives the cream time to soak in. Just keep up with it, twice a day, and you should see results in a couple of days. Let us know how it goes. Healing Vibes from Brutus and I!!!!!!!!!

Sending out loads of healing vibes for your precious Isis. I know how hard this must be on you, too, seeing her so itchy and probably very miserable. I hope she's doing better soon. Please keep us posted.

Pyotraumatic Dermatitis

I know what you and Iris are going through.....my Rockyboy has been suffering from allergies and such since he was 2 years old and he is now 5. He gets allergy shots and special foods but he still gets very bad flare-ups. We try to contol him from itching but that like trying to stop a moving train, I think a nice warm bath should help relieve some of the itching but that probably is just a temporary fix. Rocky itching got so bad that I had all my carpeting taken up and replace with Pergo flooring just so he wouldn't do more damage to himself, he itched withh such force on the carpet that he would make his stomack & ears bleed.
