Has anyone had a boxer pup with a broken leg?

Our puppy was accidentally stepped on and just got a cast put on him about a week ago. Being a nervous mom, it would be nice to hear from other people (other than the vet) that he is going to be fine.

I haven't had a boxer with a broken leg, but we did have a Shar-Pei who broke his rear leg. He had the cast on for 6 weeks, after it came off it took him a couple of weeks to realize that he could walk on it again. He healed up just fine and never had problems with the leg.

Dempsey J. broke his leg whe he was about 1.5 years old (still a puppy to me). It was a wrist bone and was broken in half, so surgeons at Michigan State University screwed it back together. He had the surgery on March 6 and things are going well. He had the cast on for 4 weeks and now he gets around just fine, but he is not allowed off-lead until May 9. Then we slowly build him up and see what he can do. It's a sad situation; you don't ever want anything bad to happen to your baby. I hope yours recovers fully and quickly. Keep us posted.

Not had a boxer with a broken leg but I had a kitten with one. He climbed up inside our recliner, my hubby didn't know he was in there and sat down, breaking his leg literally in half. He healed really quickly, matter of weeks. My vet said that the younger they are the faster they heal with things like that. I assume the same would apply to puppies.
Hope he heals quickly and is feeling like his normal self again soon!

I also hope your boxer heals quickly and efficiently. I believe the above quote applies to all animals. My parents take in foster kids, and they once had a 2.5 year old with a broken arm. They did not even cast him since it was not a major break. Young are so capable of rebounding, the doc left him to his own devices. The natural protective instincts kept it safe, and within a few weeks the child did not know he ever hurt it.

I so appreciate your comments about potty training a puppy with a cast on his back leg. It's especially fun in the rain! When he gets his cast off, I think I'll miss the circle dance that he does when he's trying to squat and balance at the same time. It's pretty cute.

Yes I have had a couple of puppies with broken legs and the most important thing I can say right now is get the cast off

Casting puppy legs is very old and very bad treatment, the preferred modern treatment is either internal fixation by plates screws etc or just simple complete rest in a crate for about 3 or 4 weeks

What the cast does in a fast growing puppy is interfere with the mormal development of the growth plates and leaves the puppy more crippled than having had a broken leg

Seriously, get the cast off ASAP

Our Dr. recommended, as an alternate solution, putting a pin in his leg, however, discouraged us from taking this route because it was unnecessary. He actually had two fractures and she thought that a cast was the best way to keep him from damaging his leg any further.

Because he is growing so quickly, he will get a new cast every two weeks to protect his growth plate from becoming damaged.
