My puppy is also a brindle but with her ears cropped. A lot of time took in to getting her ears where they are now. Taping, cleaning, antibiotics for any infections, neosporin (which is a necessity for cropped ears), and just good old patience. We have her eating twice a day, morning and evening. She is all legs!!! Muscle tone is great. I want her to be slender but muscle strong. Walking her several times a day. Her growth spurts are amazing to watch.

I know we've digressed from puppy feeding but I thought I'd just mention that you do have to be careful with the amount of forced exercise such a young pup receives.
Boxers are naturally a slender & strong breed, so I wouldn't be too concerned about her developing that way in the future.
As you said yourself, the growth spurts are amazing & this is the very reason that we need to give them every chance to do their growing without putting added pressure on their rapidly growing bones.

If you do a search on 'exercise' you'll find a heap more information on this topic. (Search engine is the little blue button to the top right of screen.)

Where did I say anything in my reply about "forced exercise"? I am not "forcing" my dog to do anything. If you remember the breed is very energetic and rambunctious. They need daily exercise outside like all dogs do. I don't see where daily walks is hurting the dog in any way. She's just walking. She is energetic, strong, smart, loyal, and has a great temperment. I believe that is the qualifications for a Boxer in the AKC. I haven't read in any books or seen in any research stating that you shouldn't walk the dog before 6 months of age. That is the basis of leash training. I would love to see a 6 month old boxer who hasn't had a leash on be taken on it's first walk.

firstly, it's FRIDAY so relax and secondly, we're just trying to give you helpful advice so your baby doesn't suffer in the long run.

forced exercise is any exercise that the dog does on leash. if you watch a boxer baby play on it's own, they'll run around and then stop when tired.

while on a walk, on leash, babies can't just STOP when they're tired, thus they're FORCED to walk.

forced exercise shouldn't be started until after 18 months of age or so after their growth plates have fully formed.

Walking is indeed forced exercise. Puppies get tired very quickly but because you are still walking then they *have* to follow you.

Yes boxers are an energetic breed and I believe that all the members here know that. Boxers however are very slow to mature. On average the boxer does not reach full adult size until they are about three years old. Because of this walking a young puppy several times a day for extended periods of time can cause injury to the dog. This forced exercise can lead to bone, joint, and growth problems. Boxers (or any medium to large breed dog) should not be taken on extended walks until they are about 1 1/2 years of age. Yes it seems like a long time but really that is in the best interest of the dog. Until then they should get their exercise from playing in the yard and having socialization time with other dogs. Does this mean you can't leash train? No. You can leash train in your back yard, at the park, up and down your driveway and inside your house. You *do not* need to take a puppy on a long walk in order to leash train.

So ...its not a good idea to take a 7 month old to a off leash dog park? ...I am concerned about the amount of running & playing would be to much for him at his age....!!
As much as I would love to....I have not taken him because of that reason....!
