I have some questions about our new puppy and wanted some opinions. I will start at the very beginning. We already had a 1 1/2 yr old male. He liked being around other dogs so we thought we would get him a companion. I was set on the colors i wanted and after about 3 months I found exactly what I was looking for. This is where the story starts. Made arrangements with the the lady to see the puppy, she was about 3 hrs from my house. She wanted to deliver and pretty much refused that I comre to her house. I told her that I wanted to see the parents and housing. She told me that was not how she done bussiness and I told her that I would look for another puppy. later she called back andsaid to come on down they would make an exception. We get there and I was blown away. I never what a puppy mill was, well I do now. She had 25 females and 12 male boxers. I will say conditions were a little better than what i have seen on the net. I was really pissed when we went into the barn. I see why she didnt want me there. Well she brings the puppy out and it was tiny. 2 were left in the litter and the male was twice the size. The little puppy was exactly what I wanted just real skinny and small. The lady said the other puppies did not let her feed as much that is why she was so small. I felt sorry for her so dicided to take her home. I figured i could fatten her up. Well we get her home at 1am and she has the runs really bad. So the next morning I go to take her to my vet. He runs some test and sas she has coccidious, this is what is causing the runs(said the parasite came from the puppy mill, possible poor sanitation or overcrowding). He gives her some meds. This was on a tuesday. Thursday night she was really sick. She was throwing up could not drink at all with out throwing up and was really weak. She would not eat at all. Friday morning I called the vet to get her in and they would not see her. Said they were to busy, that they could see her tuesday. I called around and found a vet that would see her. He gave a shot for the throwing up and said that she was dehydrated. When he checked her fecal sample sad she had coccidious real bad. Gave her albon.(this is where i kinda really wish i hadnt met this guy.) After she started to recover he told me to only feed her about a 1/3-1/2 cup a DAY. A day later she started to act normal and was energetic, but she was looking for food all day long. After a couple of days I called the vet and told she should be fed more and he told me not to because not only am I feeding her but the parasite also. So after almost 3 weeks of his care and albon treatment, she looked worst than when i got and was starving. I took her back to him on the 3 week check up and my 11 week old puppy weighed 10#'s 1 ounce and looked horrible. She also had the parasite worse than ever. I decided this was enough and decided to try another vet. After the new vet examined her he said this other guy should not be a vet. He said he was prescibing enough albon for 2# puppy and no where enough food either. So we started another 3 weeks of albon and feeding a whole lot more. She went from 10#'s to 17#'s in a week. She turned 4 months old today and weighs 23#'s. She is still developing some muscle but looks a lot better. Before you could see every bone in her body. So after this long post I was wondering if this will stunt her growth for ever. She is still pretty small for 4 months old. I have never delt with any thing like this. Some say she will catch up, others say she will just be a real small dog. Her dad(if really him) was the best looking boxer I have ever seen. dad was about 85#'s momma was about 65. I think we might be over the coccidious we will find out monday. Well thinks for reading my long post and any info would be appreciated.

anyone else delt with coccidious?

Is it possible she is becoming re-contaminated? Or did she possibly pass it to your other dog, and then she is becoming re-contaminated? It might be a good idea to treat both of them.

Unfortuntaly, this might be the start of your problems. From prior experience, dogs from these types of breeders generally have lifelong problems (either medical and/or behavorial).

You now know why the breeder did not want you coming to their place, you would know they type of breeders they truly were. I know you love your girl, but the best thing for you to have done was to have walked away and not bought her. One of the best ways to shut down this type of breeding is not to purchase from them. If the market isn't there, and they can't sell puppies into the private or commercial sector (to brokers and/or pet stores), they will quit breeding. I know how hard it would have been to have done this, and that is what they rely on.

Below is a link for you to look at regarding coccidia. It is actually not an *worm* (like round, hooks, whips), but a one-celled organisms. It can be tough to get rid of, or can keep cropping back up. (sometimes dogs can be a carrier, but they actually don't end up with problems - puppies are more prone to the actual problems, or adults with suppressed immune systems).

Now back to the breeders.......

1) Contract - I'm sure they didn't give you a written one. If they did, check to see what it says regarding health. This is something she had when you purchased her. (incubation period is 13 days)

2) Conditions dogs are in - I would report them to the local, county, & state authorities. If they don't know, they can't do anything.

3) Where do they sell their puppies (who do they sell them to?) - If they sell into the wholesale channels.....

3A) Either directly to brokers (middle men for petstores) and/or directly to the petstores - then they must be USDA licensed (because of the numbers of animals you posted you seen)

3B) If they are not selling into the *wholesale* channels, but only to private individuals - Check with your State to see what the laws are within the state you live. Many states require breeders that have this many dogs they breed to be state licensed. (generally its the Dept of Agriculture within the states).

4) Contact the local BBB's (Better Business Bureau) for your area and their area. Report them.

5) AKC - If the pup has AKC papers, I still would notify the AKC with documention of the problems. AKC can not investigate if they don't know. If the pup is registered with a different registery, I would notify them also. (some of the other registeries will register anything....they don't even have to be purebreds).

If you would like further information or help, PM (private message) me, and I'll try to get you some of the appropriate links.

Good luck with your puppy.

Sorry to hear you have had such a rough time with your new puppy. I know coccidia can be tough to deal with, if not treated right from the beginning. No personal experience, just stories from our breeder about what happened with one of their puppies when the buyer thought they knew more than they did about treating it.
Just wanted to let you know it sounds like she is already starting to recover weight wise. My puppy Gypsy just turned 16 wks on Sun and weighed in at 26 lbs at the vet on Mon. Her parents are probably about the same sizes as your pups parents.
Hopefully, your coccidia battle is over, and you & your puppy can start enjoying each other.

Katie the puppy has been checked once a week since this started. Jack my male has been checked twice and the last time was about 2 weeks ago. She went off the albon sat. and we go to the vet next monday. I hope it is over. Her stools were a lttle soft tonight but no blood at all. Does anyone think these set backs will effect her final size? These past weeks were when they do alot of growing and she did not get to. What I am trying to say is will she be smaller than she was meant to be?

Firstly you need to report the puppy mill to the athorities and you need to lay a complaint against the stupid vet who shouldnt have a lisence to practise!!!!

I have raised pups for 25 years and had coccidosis just once, possibly from birds.
The pups were given a sulpher based drug and fed COPIUIOSLY!!!
I boiled rice and pureed boiled chicken day and night and those babies never lost one ounce of weight.
It was an extremely stressful time for myself but the pups virtually never worried about it.

How terribly sad for you poor wee girl that she was born into such a helish place and then misstreated by a so called professional!
It is hard to say what final size she will grow to , but genetics are very hardy, so if she was meant to be tall its quite possible she will be.
Most animals do recover from periods of starvation, but you will just have to wait and see.
Of more importance than her final height is her long term health.
Make sure she now gets the very best of everything including a competant vet!

I cannot answer your questions regarding coccidosis, but please report this puppy mill to authorities.

I don't know how large your puppy will be in the future, but when my Samantha was 4 months old, she weighed 24 lbs., so it sounds like your pup is in the normal range for now.
