Puppy biting hard

I have worked on Duke's biting (he's 14 weeks).. sometimes, he'll stop, other times, he'll keep being persistent and will bite harder, bark and growl. I've tried giving the stern no, pulling him off, not playing with him, ignoring him and having him go to his bed, but when he starts his persistence, it feels like it becomes a battle sometimes. I've directed him to toys and praised him when he's behaving. I know this is typical puppy stuff and I don't expect him to "get it" right off, but I do expect him to stop when he starts it. He has plenty of chew stuff and although the weather isn't great for walking, he does run in the backyard. I figured once we can go for walks, he'll calm down a bit, but any suggestions on getting him to stop when he won't???

Hi,
I have a sureproof method to stop puppy biting and it has worked on every dog I have ever owned and my 12 week puppy will not bite now when I tell him "no bite". You can use any cue you want but this is what I do, when he bites me I use my index finger and thumb to pinch (with no pressure though just grabbing actually, no hurting allowed!) the bottom jaw and hold it saying no bite. Then let go. Your index finger is in the mouth on the bottom jaw and your thumb is outside under the jaw. Every single time they bite do that. I used this method on Digger and he still occasionally loses puppy control and bites and now all I say is the no bite cue, and he stops even when we are playing. For small puppies I used to just hold on to the bottom big tooth, it works the same, but for boxers I had to use the pincher fingers method.

Now I wish I could be this successful on housebreaking!

In our house we call that "getting nasty" and it usually happens when they're overtired. The times he stops, great -- the times he doesn't, straight into the crate (outside to go to the bathroom first if it's been awhile). Chances are the pup will drop right off to sleep.

Just like some human children get revved up and can't stop until you physically hold them, at which point they fall right off to sleep, puppies can turn into little nasty maniacs when overtired.

A big escalation in obnoxious behavior -- that's how you know it's bedtime!

Thanks Karen! That makes sense.. today when I came home, let him out of the crate to potty and brought him back in, he started it again but stopped when I told him no.. So it does seem like he gets "nasty" when he hasn't rested in awhile! :)

I just wanted to post to tell Cheryln55 that I tried her method and it works wonders. Tractor has been biting very hard and I tried it. To my amazement it quit almost immedialtely.

Thanks so much for the info!
