Our boy Zeus has had puppy acne on and off since he was 6 mos (now 17 mos old). We've tried antibiotics (which worked for a couple weeks) and changing his food 3 times. Do you have any tips on something we could do to help him with it? I don't want to be putting him on antibiotics all the time b/c I fear he will build up a tollerance just like any human would. Is there anything natural that you could recommend doing for him? We are taking him to the vet again to get antibiotics- but this time when it's gone I would like it to stay gone- it can't be comfortable for him! TIA!!!

Hi. When Sammi was going through that, the vet gave us a topical ointment. She popped the ones that were present with a sterile needle, then put this ointment on, I bought the rest of the tube, and only had to use it once or twice. Once Sammi hit 2, it kind of cleared up on it's own. Now, it's once in a blue moon. Good luck.

First off if you are feeding out of plastic bowls, switch to stainless steel or ceramic. The plastic harbours bacteria and can cause pimples. Then wash his face after every meal with soap and water.

I would never give antibiotics when they just have pimples, unless they are really bad. It is usually just an adolescent boxer thing and they will usually grow out of them.

Hopefully Zeus will be better soon.

I use a tea tree spay on Stars spots. She went though a stage of being really bad. It cleared them up.

Thank you all soooo much for your replies! He does have both stainless and ceramic dishes which I switch out and wash daily. We will start washing him with some soap and water after meals and I will go and look for the tea tree spray. We will give that a go for a week and if it's not better by Saturday I'll take him in to his vet to see if there is any topical ointment that will help. Thanks again, very much appreciate it!

We had the same problem with our male. Our vet told us to look at what toys he was playing with also. He had a favorite soccer ball and a basketball and when we removed those he seemed to clear up rather quickly. Now he has all of his rope toys and different bones that he plays with and occasionaly we will give him the soccer or basketball. But just staying away from those every day helped him alot.

Good Luck!

neosporin neosporin neosporin

For any boo boo-my vet tells me to use neosporin-it's an over the counter antibacteria cream/or ointment. You can pop the acne, sqeeze it then apply the neosporin-I suggest ointment because it penetrates better and the heat from the face let it just melt in. I agree, I only have had to put my girl on antibiotics when she has had like 20 of them over about a month with no improvement. Also, wipe their face after they eat with a wet paper towel too.

Dakota used to get acne too on her chin. My vet gave me the best advice ever...go to the local drug store and get a bottle of Hibitane. Wet a cloth and apply a small amount to chin (or area affected) and gently rub on. Let sit for 10 minutes and then take a wet cloth and wash off. Do this for about 4-5 days to help it heal up and then do this once a week, your baby should be acne free!!

The Hibitane can also be used on humans for cuts, scrapes, etc. It is used in hospitals too and is quite inexpensive as you don't need much. Good luck!
