price of a pup

I paid $600 for Max and we bought him from a breeder in Iowa.
Best $600 I ever spent!! That seems to be the going rate for a puppy here in Wisconsin from what I've heard from other Boxer moms and dads. It would seem to me that Michigan might be similar??

The Iowa breeder was charging more for females, but since I wanted a boy, I didn't pay attention to that.

I recieved Muggsy from an ad in the newpaper and this man was wonderful. They had had all there shots and dewormers and both his dogs were great looking boxers. He had shown boxers for ever. I think not all people who advertise in the newspaper are bad just be careful.

That's just it, shots and dewormers is not what we are talking about in terms of health testing nor a guarentee of health for the pup. We are talking about hip/heart/and other genetics testing done on the father and mother before they are allowed to breed. These tests costs a lot of money, in the thousands... plus both parents have gone through conformation in the show ring... people/breeders who go through all this to breed one litter of puppies truly have the health of the puppies and the standards of the breed in mind and not just making money. So if you can afford that, support these people who've really made our breed so wonderful.

We paid 1000.00 (Canadian) for our puppy in October. She came from a breeder with an excellent reputation. We were given her family tree, a one year warranty, and she was registered and tattooed. I recommend that you visit both the mother and the father before seeing the puppies. Happy Puppy hunting!

I had mine for free :) A friend of my dad is a boxer breeder. He once gave us a pup (bungie, a brindle boxer) years ago and now that I'm on my own, he gave me my little Bailey (fawn boxer). And we had first choice both times!

I take offense at this. I found my miniature dachshund through the newspaper. He is registered, well behaved and beautiful. My mother found Beau through the newspaper. The breeder was giving him away due to an illness in the family. I had to show her vet records and tell her why I wanted him before she even considered me as a possible candidate. I had to promise to neuter Beau before she gave him to me. She is by no means a back yard breeder. She screens every person who looks at one of her puppies and turns people down if she doesn't feel they want the dog for the right reasons. She even has a scrap book with pictures and addresses of all the puppies she had sold and their owners. Beau was free. If she were a greedy byb, she would have SOLD him. You should think twice about knocking where people get their dogs. An ad in the paper might lead you to the puppy you've been dreaming of. Sorry if all of us don't have a grand to spend on a dog and would rather rescue one in need. Not everyone who places an ad in the newspaper is motivated by greed.

Here are a couple of websites that have been great resources for both myself and friends. I hope its ok to post these if not, I apologize.

www.petfinder.org and click on the classified section or select search by state and that lists local rescues or animal shelters that have what you are looking for.

Edited by Moderator. Please check the rules - you may not post links to other forums This is another site and posts are usually from caring people who are looking for good homes or you can place an ad saying you are looking to adopt. This one doesn't allow breeders to advertise and also provides transportation information for people who need transportation from far away.

I found my Cooper through one of these and though we have no history on his background (parents, health, where he was purchased etc) he has been a wonderful boxer and has no issues what so ever. We got him when he was just over 1 years old because his first owners got divorced and then placed him with another woman who had a cat and he supposedly wasn't cat friendly...but that turned out to be our gain! We adopted him (Free of charge!) and we had a cat and Cooper gave chase at first, but eventually learned to like the kitty.

With the right resources you will find one that meets your needs for the price you can afford. Good luck to you, no matter what you pay they are truly the best and will give it all back to you in love!

I don't think anyone would or is slamming people for rescuing boxers. Every boxer along with every pet deserves a good home. The only thing that one might question is not the affordability of a puppy but if you don't have $1000 to spend on a puppy what would you do if your dog needs surgery? That is why breeders shy away from people who ask the price before anything. I am not posting to start an argument but it is a valid concern.

Well, my boss' best friend is a vet so I get vet care for free. Even if I didn't, I would sacrifice anything I had to in order to save my boys. I don't believe in putting animals to sleep. I held my cat in my arms until she died. I make sure to take good care of them so that nothing happens to them. They are vaccinated on the same date every year and are fed the best money can buy. Here's a question: If someone spends a grand on a dog, are they really going to have any money left for vet care??? Get real. Most people don't have that kind of money to spare. As far as testing: if one of your relatives screens positive for a disease, are you going to say that their parents weren't reputable breeders? You can't always predict whether or not a dog (or person) will get sick or not. You take them for what they are and love them. You don't always get what you pay for. My mother paid a LOT of money for one of her championship dogs and the dog died shortly after. My dad has a black lab from a nationally ranked bloodline. The dog doesn't even look like a lab. I think people focus too much on what money can buy. Money isn't the issue. A free dog can give as much or more love than one that costs $1000. People need to focus on what they can do for a creature rather than what kind of creature their money will buy. I would rather be a responsible and intelligent mom with a modest amount of money than an idiot with a lot of money that thinks that paying $1000 will assure that he or she will get a perfect dog.

And that will be enough of that particular agument. I'll just remind you to review the rules for posting on this forum, especially this part:

Beausmommy: You may have got a perfectly good dog from a perfectly good breeder from a newspaper advert. Well that's great. The fact remains, however, that 95% of newspaper ads are placed by backyard breeders and puppy mills, and the vast majority of reputable breeders don't advertise their pups that way. Sorry if you find that concept offensive, but it doesn't alter the fact. And since nobody has suggested that there is anything wrong with your dog and most certainly nobody has suggested that there is anything wrong with rescue (quite the reverse, in fact), your offense is misplaced. Continue the flaming and it won't be on this site.

The OP's question has been well answered, and this thread is now closed.
