Pressed/compressed rawhide?

Tae does not get rawhides to chew, as I have read too much about the potential intestinal blockages they can cause. When I first adopted her, though, the rescue group woman suggested compressed or pressed rawhide. I've looked at it in the stores, but never bought it. According to the "wrapper," it comes off the "bone" in small shreds. Are these OK for my girlie?

On a simlar note, I do occasionally give Tae sticks made of very small chunks or rawhide. These are not smooth in appearance, but rather grainy looking as if the rawhide was cut into small pieces and smushed together.

I do buy the occasional bully stick, but it tends to make a mess on the carpet. I'm looking for an alternative that will provide for some good chewing. We have a sterilized calf shinbone, but it only gets occasional chews! ...same with the Nylabones.

Hmmm...dont know about the rawhides b/c that's something I've never given my dog. He seems to like the edible Nylabones that are flavored like chicken, carrot, peanut butter, those kind. He wont chew on just a regular bone but he likes those, he gets one every Saturday morning.

I don't trust the pressed rawhide bones. I almost lost one of my dogs several years ago. The outside wrap opened up to reveal smaller chunks of rawhide. I had used this company's bones for several years, but guess they decided to go cheap and not care about their product. I did not notice until my girl was gasping for air from one of the smaller chunks. I could not get it loose. She was turning blue. I called the vet and raced in. She had all but passed out by the time I got there. He had major problems getting it out. No more pressed rawhides for my guys.

I give the three foot bullies or nylabones. My guys love the chicken flavor. If they don't know what they are, try letting them have a gumabone first. The gumabones are a softer material and chews easier.

Do the Nylabones come apart....meaning can the dogs chew chunks off of them? Herkie has amazing jaw pressure and can seemingly destroy indestructible things? He can't have any sort of bone or rawhide, as it might get caught in the strictured area in his throat. I would love to be able to give him some sort of flavored bone that he couldn't tear chunks off of.

Back to the rawhide Becky, I used to give some to Herkie when he was a pup...before I knew any differently. He never had much interest in the regular rawhide bones, but loved the compressed ones. I was giving them too him too often, once again, didn't know any better. After he threw a couple of them up...I just stopped it all together. Good Luck in finding something suitable.

Actually, I have been told by 3 different vets that the pressed is MUCH better than the regular rawhide bones. Personally, I have given the pressed and had no problems. I know many people who have used pressed and have also, had no problems. I actually heard the opposite for regular rawhides though. That is, the bone can expand in the stomach causing blockage and bloat. I don't know if that is true, but I believe I heard that from a vet at one time. I do know that after I heard that, I stopped giving them to Tomi.

I give both my two raw hide and pressed rawhide (it comes in small beef jerkey liks strips very thin?) I guess no more of that! What about pig ears, soup bones, greenies, and bully sticks?(four foot bull penis?) My two just don't like plastic chew toys! I would love some other options please help!

Tyson&Ali, bully sticks are fine. In fact, Tae's birthday is tomorrow and she will be getting one as a present! She'll be chewing on it in the kitchen, though, so as not to mess the carpet--or maybe I'll cave in, we'll see.

I'm quite paranoid about the intestinal blockage or choking risk associated with some of these chewies. Tae is not a huge chewer, but when I got her, she "came with" a rawhide and she sure loved it. Unfortunately for her, I took it away within a couple hours.

Jessica--the Nylabones are difficult to destroy, but if Herkie is a big chewer, you might either want to buy the biggest one they have or watch him when he has one. Tae chews on hers here and there (2-3 minutes before bed some nights) and I have yet to replace either b/c she has not done any major destruction.

Boo doesn't get raw hide in any shape ...form ..or fashion...!!!!!..Never has ...never will !!! IMO ..its to messy & dangerous !!!!

I didn't know any of htis either...a friend had mentioned it to me a couple weeks ago... Guinness likes to chew too. He just had his first bully stick so I guess that's good. But he LOVES rawhide...hope he doesn't get mad... maybe I'll let him have the pressed once in a while... Are pigs ears not good either???? he definitely Loves those too.

I've hear too many stories about how bad rawhide is...

They are all natural and are digestable... it takes him about a week or so to go thru a Wolf size. (His favorite is ham and cheese :D) I can devert his attention from anything with these- it's a miracle for us. Petco seels them too, but they are really expensive there. Oh! And I see they are on sale at Dr Fosters right now... hmmm... :D
