I just got back from the vet yesterday for Baxter's severe allergic reaction. He has hives all over his ears and neck area. Our vet gave us Predisone. My question is, how long does this medicine take before you can actually tell any improvement. I gave him the 10mg last night and this morning. Thanks!

Predisone

We had our boxer mix on Predisone several times for cancer. I works fairly quickly, or it did for her, the real problem we had with her and Predisone is that she drank literally gallons of water a day and of course put out ever bit that much, so even though she was house broken she had no control over her bladder for sometime. She did gain about 9 lbs during the treatment period but that came off after the treatment ceased.

I'm with you, Shakira's Ma..... Barney has been on and off prednisone for quite some time, now. The most recent is to 'deflame' the inflammation on his ear, a secondary effect of the radiation on his mast-cell tumor site.

The first time he 'lost it' was on our bed.... poor thing absolutely hates mistakes and looked completely devastated. Since then, he wakes us about 0200 for his excess bladder work.

What I'd like to know, if anyone can answer it, is what effect the prednisone has on the behavior of the dog. He has been through radiation, antibiotics, benadryl and pred and seems somewhat lethargic (who wouldn't, right?)

He now is on the withdrawal dosage of the pred..... about ten days left of decreasing dosages... and we're hoping the the lethargy is just an after-effect of the treatment and/or a side effect of the pred.

From my experience with Prednisone and my boxer, lethargy is not one of the side effects. I questioned my vet re: lethargy too, but we found it was from her antiobiotic not the Pred.

Thanks for the reply. Shortly after I posted this it was brought to my attention that Barney and Chloe are in the throes of play........for the first time in a few days for him.

We stopped the antibiotic on Tuesday and, apparently, he's been somewhat constipated by it since he's made four trips to the 'sandbox' already this morning.

I guess it just took this much time to get it out of his system. (lol)

coldguy I have to agree with Poetic_Thing, lethargy is not one of the side effects or at least not in my dog. I does make them look very muscular and bulky while they are in the water weight gaining period

Caesar was recently on pred for a severe bout with allergies. It took about 4 or so days before I saw any kind of relief. I've never used pred for the hives just benedryl and the hives usually are gone in about 6-12 hours sometimes sooner, depending on the allergy.

Do you know exactly (or have a suspect) of what your baby is allergic to?
