Unfortunately they do not all outgrow it. This boxer is 6 years old and has had it all of its life. I'm not sure if they let it go too long without treatment as a puppy or what.

I guess I'm a little confused. According to the article you posted, it's usually diagnosed as a puppy. I realize you said they may have let it go on too long as a puppy and that is why the problem persists. However, you mentioned the dog is 6 years old and has had it (lions jaw) all it's life...so why is there only now a problem with the prednisone? Has he just recently started taking pred or is he just recently having bladder problems?
Perhaps there's another medication that can be used instead???

The owners just got the dog around 4 months ago from friends. I don't think there was communication as to what the problem was with the dog. They ended up taking it to the vet and found out what it had and realized they were needing to give it prednesone on a continual basis.

I would suggest they talk to their vet about the problem. He/she may have an alternative medication to treat the lions jaw, or may can recommend other methods to alleviate the bladder issue.
If there are no other solutions, I would advise your friends to seek the help of a rescue group to help find a suitable home, and someone willing to deal with his medical issues.

Could surgery to restructure the jaw be an option for this dog? As I understand it, Prednisone won't reverse the condition. It sounds like it is being used as an anti-inflammatory to relieve the pain of the condition. I wonder if surgery was suggested, but the owners instead opted to manage the pain rather than correct the condition. Is surgery not an option given the dog's age or health status? Either way, I would suggest surrendering the dog to a rescue that would be willing to get the dog the surgery or adopt the dog to someone willing to live with the frequent urination.
