I am first time dog owner and was wondering, what might be the appropriate age for a puppy to become potty trained? I know all dogs are different, so I am just wondering is it close to 6 months.... 9 months or longer, or less??? I spoke to my vet and she stated 4 months... But I think that might be too soon....

I think 4 months is a bit hopeful....most everyone from our vet to advice on here suggested not to expect them to be fully trained until 8 months or so....Sasha was pretty much done at 5 months but still an accident or so a week was not uncommon! Every dog is different, but regular schedules are essential to success! Good luck!

puppy bisuits.....

Was wondering, not too sure if its a boxer thing, but my puppy doesn't seem to be the biggest fan of puppy biscuits.... Does anyone have any suggestions on one she might find tasty? I like to keep her on pretty much a strict diet, but I want her to have some type of puppy biscuit... She has some that go with her puppy food... and she just doesn't seem to like them....

Hello!
Cisco will be 8 months tomorrow, he is fully potty trained. He had accidents every once in a while till about 6-7 months old. Most of the time it was b/c I did not put him out to go. He does not go to the door, I just put him out about every 3 hrs or so.
Cisco will not touch any biscuits that are hard. I get him soft treats like the jerky ones.

Deuce is about 8 1/2 months old and is fully potty trained -- hasn't had an accident in at least 3 months and even around that time, they were rare. We use a bell on the door for him to ring when he needs to go out and it works awesome -- as soon as we put it up, he learned how to use it and the accidents were over.

He doesn't like many biscuit treats either. We try to keep some chicken on hand for serious training -- nothing gets his attention better than fresh meat. For daily kennel treats, he gets some chewy bacon treats.

Hope that helps.

Bell?????

I have heard of that before..... I know I still got many months to go before my Doja is potty trained, I love her, so I don't mind too much cleaning up her little 'accidents', But I am trying my best for her to succeed..... She will go to the door, but she won't wait for me or let me know she is there....

Did you just put the bell on a string and tie it to the door knob? Right now, Doja goes to the back door, she'll check and see if its open, thus moving the blinds and thats how I know she is there....

The bell will probably work really well for her, then. We had the same problem -- he would go to the door but wouldn't make a sound so if we didn't see him there right away, he'd have an accident. I just went to hobby lobby and got a big bell, tied it to a string, and hung it on the door and he was ringing it within the first day. You just have to show him by ringing it and then opening the door several times to demonstrate. Now, he has gotten so if he rings it and we don't come right away, he will use it to pull the sliding glass door open and just let himself out. This would be great if we could just teach him to close it, too!

re: biscuits

Chloe didn't like puppy treats either. She did like her kibble as treats; or small pieces of cheese -- or apple. She also LOVED - and still does - Cheerios (plain kind)... -which is not bad for her (and easy to eat)... - so try that.
