Sorry I missed this when I was doing the other reply :) Telazol looks pretty good, I have no experience with it at all, but I can't find anything as far as general contraindication by breed, and apparently it's used heavily for wildlife relocation sedation and is reversible, so it may be a very good choice for travelling especially.

:)

Zsara:

If you can get the laser procedure, it is worth the extra money. :)
I think I paid $245 or so for Bax's laser neuter, but his healing time was only 3 days as opposed to 7-10, which when it involves keeping a boxer calm for 10 days, is priceless. :p

My drug of choice when travelling with a boxer is bourbon, but I suppose Valium would work for me too.

Here is a link that should be helpful

Like I said, I prefer laser but with rescues it isn't feasible. They are all spayed and neutered the conventional way and we rarely have any complications from it. If you are looking for inexpensive options, there are plenty out there that don't include the laser procedure and some that may--here is another list for you.

Hi,
I rescued Champ through a Vet. Hospital that he had been
abandoned at. So no, they didn't have him fixed, nor did
they require me to do so. He had been terribly abused.
Physically, starved, he had heart worm, and hook worm,
by the time I came into his life, he had gained 15 lbs and
had one heart worm treatment to go. So maybe with all
that going on, they couldn't fix him. He is an absolute
dream of a dog. It breaks my heart everytime I think
about someone beating him etc. He also had 4 non cancerous
tumors that I had to have removed, I guess I just feel that
for now he has been through enough. :)

but i'm not too sure ???

Only the best for my baby!

We go on vacation starting this weekend. Blade will stay home with a sitter for a couple of days, then we will take him to Deep Creek for his summer vacation. Sube Ru will tell ya....We had a Birthday Beach Boxer Bash! And Blade learned how to swim....lol But I digress.

I will follow-up and try to find a vet who does laser w/o ACE upon my return...

I disagree with this statement. It is slightly possible but the odds of this happening are very slim. If the breeder is "responsible" then they have the owners sign a contract saying that they have to return the dog to the breeder if the owner can not keep the animal. Now I know you said that this doesn't mean squat, however if the breeder is truly "responsible" they will keep in touch with the people whom they place a dog with even if that is years down the road. I bet the "responsible" breeders on here can tell you exactly where their puppies are and the last time they talked to the owner. It is "irresponsible" breeders who do not follow up and it is thier puppies who end up in shelters
;)

The breeder that I got Riley from keeps in touch. I think we both prefer it that way. They've even come over to my house to see our property and to see how Riley was doing. She was very impressed with everything that she saw. However, that doesn't mean that one day I couldn't just pack my bags and move to Alaska (for example) without letting her know about it. Heck, nevermind Alaska, what if I moved to the next city over without telling her?? I could probably get away with giving Riley up without her knowing. I'm only using this as an example many many many things could happen leaving a dog homeless. Please know that I would NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER just give Riley up this way. Riley is my baby and I would do the best thing for him. If worst came to worst I would call the breeder and expain the situation. I'm just trying to say that breeders do create more pups and they sometimes do end up in shelters. It's all such a sad cycle. I wish I could save all unwanted dogs, but that's definitely unrealistic. I am however doing what I can to help, donating to shelters, donating to many animal welfare causes, and of course spaying/neutering my animals as soon as I can. Oh, if it sounds like I'm rambling, I'm sorry. I just got back from an amusement park and I've exhausted!!!

This thread is has become VERY interesting- we need more like this :)

Boxer21- you are correct, you could move to alaska or the next city over and the breeder may never know about it, but guess what- you better hope they dont find you because if breeders are like rescues and you dont keep in touch- WE CAN TAKE THE DOG BACK and we WILL!!!! PBR doesnt have a big prob with this but i do know we have taken a dog or two back because the owner did not keep in contact. Also Breeders and Rescuers look for people that seem sneaky, if we dont get a good feeling about you, YOU DONT GET OUR DOG and the dogs that have been adopted out and we keep in contact with speaks volumes for our judgements and i am sure breeders fill the same.

Speaking of breeders where are they???? i was hoping for some of their input on this issue also :)

Cubby- without me getting a map- i am too lazy and not direction oriented- what state do you live in? it made me very said to see your statics, in that i am naive, i keep track of rescues more then shelters because i think shelters would upset me too much and i would be more cynical then i am already.

Zsara- I do not know if Dr. Cook does laser but it is defintly something to check out- she is AWESOME!!

As far as valum for me- nope you better knock me out instead- i am a worry wart.

Mandy you are very right, an owner could just up and move far away without giving any notice to the breeder. Whew! talk about being an irresponsible owner if someone did that when the owner had previously signed a contract stating they would keep in touch with the breeder. Now if once the owner gets settled and calls the breeder to inform them that is a different story. But if the owner just up and leaves with no warning or no contact after the fact, chances are if the *responsible* breeder found out, like Heather said, they can come and take the dog back. And if after they move and the owner decides to give the dog up without talking to the breeder about it first, all hell would break loose if said breeder found out.

Does this mean it doesn't happen? NO. However like I stated before the odds of this happening are very slim and that is my point. *Responsible* breeders do not contribute to the shelter population as much as bybs and "oops" litters do. The chances of running into a responsilby bred animal in a shelter is a rarity. :)

Heather -

Because the stats do suck, I specifically don't want to identify he shelter - although they are great people, try very hard, love the dogs and are extremely rescue friendly. Anyway, I live part time in Atlanta, Ga and part time in Asheville, NC. These shelter stats are for neither of these, but a neighboring county of one.

:)
