Owning a show dog is much different than owning a pet quality pet and not altering them by choice ;)

With that said, the vast majority of dogs that enter rescue and shelters are unaltered, those statistics speak for themselves. Obviously the benefits of spaying and neutering outweigh the risk or we'd be filled with just as many pets that are already spayed and neutered! IMO, a big part of supporting rescue means doing your part to help educate the public on proper dog ownership and responsibility. Part of this education is in regards to spaying and neutering to cut down on the number of senseless deaths of animals each year in shelters. It is hard for one to educate on the benefits of spaying and neutering if they choose not to do so themselves.

Personally I feel it should be left up to the individual pet owner as to whether or not to neuter/spay. If an owner is making an educated decision, then I don't think this is irresponsible. Many people on this site do not vacinate because of their beliefs. Should these people be called irresponsible?

Post after post we read that rescues are over crowed. If a person proves in every way that he/she is "responsible pet owner", I think it is silly to turn someone done because there current dog is not neutered/spayed.

How is keeping an INTACT Male or female being responsible??
you can not tell me 100% that that dog whether male or female will not get pregnant. No matter how much you try to prevent it, IT STILL HAPPENS!!! Do you think all the mutts in a shelter are done on purpose??? No they were ACCIDENTS but accidents that could have been prevented if the owner would have fixed their dog.
There is NO 100% guarantee a dog will not get pregant EXCEPT by spaying and neutering. And there is NO reason that is good enough except- show and RESPONSIBLE breeders- for keeping an intact male/female. It does not alter their personality except for a male dog- they are less agressive towards people and other male dogs. and the health perks should be enough to persuade any parent.

Yes rescues are overcrowded- BUT we are overcrowded because people did not want to spay/neuter there dog- just like aimee stated the amount of UNneutered and UNspayed females in rescue is astonishing. And the majority of the reason people dont want to spay/neuter is cosmetics- AGAIN SELFISH
We, as rescues, have FIRM and STRONG beliefs, and one of those is that dogs be spayed/neutered, if we go and give a rescue to a home that has a dog that is NOT spay/neuter- we are HYPOCRITES and i for one refuse to be a Hypocrite.

You are correct in saying that if an owner makes an educated decision then they are being responsible.

Educated - based on some knowledge of fact.

If one decides not to neuter or spay, what we are asking is what facts state that it is more advantageous not to? Making educated decisions mean you weigh the pros and cons and at that point make your decision upon what is best (meaning the pros outweigh the cons). I do not see any facts that it is in the ANIMALS best interest not to spay and neuter. This is a decision that people make on behalf of their own beliefs. What we in rescue are trying to do is to educate pet owners on what is best for their ANIMALS, which is our main concern.

I have never rescued so I have never been told I had to neuter anybody. I do tend to get upset when told to do something but after reading through these posts I at least understand the reasons. I always learn something on here.;)

Anyway, Corgan is not neutered (yet). I have never seen him try to get at a female, he is very strange I think.:D When Loke went into heat (twice:rolleyes: ) he never paid her no mind. I always intended to get Loke spayed from day one, since she was female I didn't want to be having any babies. But I kept putting it off until the second heat then she was scheduled to go in in 6 weeks to be done and she was. To be honest, with a male dog I didn't think it was necessary since I wouldn't have the puppies and Corgan has never gotten out. This was pre-BW. ;) Now I HAVE to get Corgan neutered for medical reasons. I don't know if he had been neutered from 6 months is that would prevent this but the vet says that neutering will put an end to it. So it will be done.:) Buttons is also getting neutered soon, he's only 7 months now. I'll probably do them both at the same time.

I have a Vet that I have been taking all my pets to since the begining of time. That being said, Where in your opinon is the safest place that has resonable prices (I am sure the cost vary)to take a family pet to get neutered or spayed???

Zsara,

I use Spay, Inc when having spays and neuters done. We have a low cost spay/neuter clinic here in my area that I use for rescues as needed. They do however serve the general public. Spay, Inc operates for Virginia and Washington, DC but they do have a contact for Maryland on their website

http://www.spay.org/

What I like about their organization is that my vet was a participator so I was able to use her. I called them and they took my pets information and then gave me a control number. I provided this number to my vet. This allowed me reduced services. I was able to have Lexi's spay done by laser through the vet of my choice for around $100. I was pleased.

If your vet is not a participator, talk with one who is. Speak with them about the procedure, what types of anesthia they use and if they are accepting of your request to not use ACE. Find out if they offer laser surgery if that is your preference. If you are comfortable with the information given you can then make your appointment and if not, you can pick another from the list. Spays and neuters are considered routine procedures. Neuters are not as invasive as spays and therefore are relatively cheaper. Best of luck and keep us posted.

The city I live in and most of the communities in this area charge dog owners that have intact dogs a larger licensing fee. The reason for this is to compensate the local shelters housing all of the unwanted dogs/puppies that are being produced by the intact animals. I believe that accidents do happen and that is why everything should be done to try and prevent them. Unless you have a show quality dog (or cat for that matter) that you are showing, there doesn't seem to be a good enough reason to leave them intact. By no means am I try to imply that if you have an intact pet that you are irresponsible pet owner, it is just my opinion that spaying and neutering a pet is a smart choice.
