1- You basically said that it's irresponsible to not neuter/spay your pet, correct??
2- You then basically said that there is no good reason to keep a pet unspayed/unneutered unless it's a show dog or owned by a responsible breeder, correct?.
Hi Mandy-
I didnt take it at all that you were trying to argue

this board is all about people having different opinions, expressing those opinions and finding a happy medium- pat myself on the back that was a good way to put it
I think irresponsible is a little harsh but i can not think of a better word. i guess i should have clarified my 2 statements.
When i am saying a "responsible" breeder i am referring to someone that
1. has done the health testing
2. meets the standards that have been set regarding the breed
3. and actually breeds the dogs with another dog that has the same health testing done like kamino kennels, pawprints etc etc- these are the "responsible" breeders, they have done EVERYTHING to ensure that the dogs they have and are planning to have are up to "snuf"
Yes they might have an "oops" litter but it is NOT likely to be a dog on the street, there are enough women and men to go around where they are at
also atleast if it is an "oops" litter, its with a bitch or stud who has the health testing and everything else and i am sure they have people on waiting lists just waiting for one of their pups and finding a good home would not be a prob and they have the means that if something goes wrong THEY take back the dog, the dog doesnt go to rescue or shelters.
Regarding the other statement about irresponsible pet owners not spaying or neutering.
Why would someone have an intact male or female? what good benefical reason is there? there is not one.
It is about the cosmetics/look of the dog. And that is being irresponsible-for lack of better term. If there is no intention of breeding the dog, or showing the dog then you are tempting fate by not having the dog fixed.
like cubby stated- "Post after post we read about accidental breedings, too. " because someone didnt spay/neuter there dog. I have heard and seen some male dogs do about ANYTHING to get to a female in heat. A breeder knows what to do in situations like this that the average joe, like myself, dont know to prevent a male/female hook up.
Also to me it is irresponsible to not get the dog fixed when it has been PROVEN that a unneutered male has a strong likelihood of getting cancer- that is irresponsible!! You are risking the health of your dog for cosmetics alone!
My husband and I had this discussion last night because i wanted to see what he thought- at first he felt that rescues had no business telling people what they can and can not do, but when i explained why we do that and the reasoning he was like ohhh i see and you guys are correct.
rescues PROMOTE spaying and neutering to stop all the senseless and needless births/deaths and by giving someone a dog that does not believe in this very belief then we are going against everything we "rescues" believe in.
Thousands of dogs get put to sleep a year because people did not want to spay or neuter their dog- this is needless and irresponsible.
* i also am not trying to start an argument but when rescues get questioned about their beliefs (also lack of better word) then it stirs my blood
