How many pet owners actually pay to have.....

Neuticals??

That could be a sub Poll Question.  ;)

I think neuticals are really more a way to cheat in the show world, since show dogs must be intact, but they are out there if anyone wants them.

Just had another thought. A conversation at a party:

What do you do for a living?
Oh, I am the inventor of faux dog testicals.
How's business?

Just curious ???

Hi,
I rescued Champ through a Vet. Hospital that he had been
abandoned at. So no, they didn't have him fixed, nor did
they require me to do so. He had been terribly abused.
Physically, starved, he had heart worm, and hook worm,
by the time I came into his life, he had gained 15 lbs and
had one heart worm treatment to go. So maybe with all
that going on, they couldn't fix him. He is an absolute
dream of a dog. It breaks my heart everytime I think
about someone beating him etc. He also had 4 non cancerous
tumors that I had to have removed, I guess I just feel that
for now he has been through enough. :)

poll

I think the poll should have included a question as to whether or not you are going to consider breeding, including all the proper things to do or whether the dog is strictly going to be a pet .

With the majority of pets I believe they are better off being altered, nuetered, spayed, JUST MY OPINION. While many people would consider all the consequences most do not and do not give pets the care and consideration they deserve. Having an intact male or female can cause another whole world of problems that could determine whether the dog/cat is kept or gotten rid of. HOW many puppies and kittens do the agencies receive because they are unwanted..

I do believe if you adopt the dog from the humane society, animal control or a rescue, they should be altered, because the goal of all of these is to help ensure the animal has a better life and if people considered adopting who wanted to make money on breeding, etc, it would defeat the whole purpose of rescue. The reason most dogs end up in rescue among many others is owners do not treat the animals as family members.

I voted they should all be nuetered and spayed, because I feel that is better than not.

Here are some questions most commoning ask by people looking to adopt boxer in our rescue program. Maybe it will help some of you understand the reasons why on various issues.

Found under the Boxer Briefs Area.

Specifically, look for the question titled:
Why do you require my current pets to be spayed or neutered?

Rescues feel that if you are a supporter of rescue and what we stand behind then you will help by doing your part and will spay and neuter your pet.

Hi Aimee,

I don't have Atlas neutered because he is shown. If he wasn't then he would be. But because he in un-neutered does that mean that I don't support rescue organisations?

I am not being nit picky, I am very happy that there are people out there that donate so much of their free time and money to help dogs in need but to think that I am not a supporter because of the choices that I have made with Atlas makes me a little upset.

Anyhow this isn't a personal attack on you just my opinion, or maybe I am taking that statement way out of context:)

Hummm...

There are various people that brought up questions or comments that i would love to reply to but then my reply would be WAY TO LONG
so i am going to generalize.

Re showing: we will SOMETIMES adopt out to a family that SHOWS there dog, we just require that you show proof that your dog is a "show" dog. We require the proof because many people will say their dog is a "show" dog when in fact they are not. and they go through a SERIES of questions not because we think they are unfit but sometimes it doesnt always work, especially a male intact and a neutered male.

Re breeders: aimee is correct on this one, what i have found is most breeders are so busy with their own thing that they do not have rescues but are avid supporters and help out in other ways BUT if a breeder did come looking for a rescue we would check everything to make sure they are in fact RESPONSIBLE breeders- health checks, look at their return policy etc etc.

These are the ONLY 2 expections for a reason, what reason is there to have an intact dog besides the ones above mentioned?

I dont care what ANYONE says, when a male is intact and he smells a female they get extremely HORNY and will do WHATEVER to get to that female, i have seen a male go so nuts (excuse the term ) that they have broken through a window when a unspayed female walked in front of their house. Thereby INCREASING the overpopulation this country already suffers by the "oops" litters and adds to the amount recues do.
NO ONE can guarantee me 100% that their unneutered male will not get out and get to a unspayed female, you can not guarantee that, look at how many dogs get loose on BW, not through neglect but by accident but that is all we need is for an "accident" to happen and a male and female- both intact- have a night of whoopie :)
Also- look at how many puppies are getting stolen from backyards- MOST are intact, and stolen for breeding/fighting
Cubbie also brought up an excellent point about a male intact meeting for the first time a rescue male- there will be ISSUES!!! been there done that- NEVER want to see that again.

To me and MANY rescues, there is NO reason to NOT neuter your male/female, i have read this whole thread and NOBODY has given a good reason besides they dont think it is fair. and that is NOT GOOD ENOUGH for rescue- sorry.

Is it fair to have a dog get cancer because they werent spayed/neutered?
Is it fair to add to the overpopulation because they werent spayed/neutered and their was an "oops"?
Is it fair to a rescue dog to get into a fight with an intact male because it wasnt spayed or neutered?

I am a STRONG supporter of neutered/spayed pets because there is no reason for a dog not to be, most owners do not spay/neuter because of cosmetic looks and that is SELFISH.

Aimee- you said EXACTLY what i had to say but of course i had to put in my 2 cents :)

I voted yes -- all should be spayed. The reasons behind my vote have already been well-stated by others -- responsible pet ownership includes spaying or neutering your pet. Doing so helps provide for their good health and happiness, so there are very few reasons I would find acceptable for not spaying a neutering. The only exception I would add to those already mentioned (show dogs and reputable breeders) would be dogs that cannot undergo surgery for medical reasons -- and then I would want to be able to talk to a vet to establish without a doubt that the pet was intact for that reason only.

I don't mean to sound like I'm pointing fingers at anyone who has chosen not to spay or neuter their pet or calling them irresponsible, but I do strongly urge you to reconsider your decision. It is the best option for your own dog and to prevent misery for unwanted puppies that are born accidentally. I am curious for those who haven't (and aren't showing or breeding) what your reasons are. I'm not trying to argue at all -- I'm just trying to understand the rationale -- it is fear of surgery? Fear of changing the personality or size of the dog?
