Crating

We crated from birth to about 1 year. At 16 months he's perfect!!
God bless us, he has no accidents and only chewed 1 pair of sunglasses (during Christmas 2005 and the glasses were left under the tree).

We crate Darlin just when we're gone. She's a perfect angel when we're home but as soon as we leave her alone in the house, she gets REALLY mad and takes no prisoners in her path of destruction. We've attempted leaving her out as she gets older . . . .every 2 or 3 months but each time, after the 2nd or 3rd day, we end up having to put her back in.

So far, she's gone through 4 pairs of my husband's Oakley sunglasses, an IPOD and numerous pairs of heels. . . only those with heels. She has very good taste and it seems she only gets the expensive stuff.

She doesn't mind being in there at all. We leave the door open when we're home and she goes in there a lot even on her own to nap.

we used the crate alot when we first got cash for potty trainning and to save our furniture. We dont use it as much anymore. Probably 3-4 hours a day. I think it was a good idea because cash has never chewed anything of ours and it worked great for potty training. Now that he knows all the rules we dont put him in it as much

sometimes

We started out crating Thor at night and when we were away. But he has proven himself trustworthy to be out at night and I like the idea that he would hear an intruder. but when he is home alone, ALWAYS in the crate. he had his one chance at that and tore the house up.

I haven't needed to put Blaze in a crate at night or while we were away from the house. However, he's become a menace over the last couple of weeks. We are going this weekend to buy a crate. I think it's time to give it a shot or hubby says Blaze has to find a new home. :(

From the time Rocco came home with us he was crated. At about 9 months we started letting him out of the crate for a 1/2 hr at a time when we were out and gated off the den. He did great. We always left the crate door open and and he would just lounge peacefully while we were out. Eventually he proved he could be trusted so we barely used the crate although we left it in the room. Well recently we folded up the crate and gave it back to my dh's cousin and wouldn't you know that next day he ripped up the blinds and tore up the curtains and even chewed on a couple of my daughter's dvds that were on the top of the entertainment center. It was like he instinctivly knew he was done with the crate and the room was a free for all or something.

I have one that has free roam of the house as he will not eat anything, but my youngest stays in a crate while I am gone as he really enjoys eating my windowsills or anything else he can get his paws on. Although I am worried about him destroying the house, I'm more worried that he will eat something or find something to eat that I didn't see that will hurt him in some way. He is very young though, and hopefully he will grow out of it one day! I do try leaving him alone for short amounts of time, but I have not yet been able to leave him without him finding something to get into, so for now he will continue to be crated.

My male Cisco was crate trained until about 18 months old and has been fine in the house since then. We now have a 4 month old female, Cali. She is and will be crate trained until about the same age as her brother was. It really helps with housetraining as well as keeping her out of trouble when we aren't home.
