I wasn't too sure how to vote as I have a yes and no as well.
Xena was crated for potty training purposes, and has been crate-free since. She'll be 10 in November. :D
Spirit will be 2 in November and is crated when no one is home. He's a brat. :)

I have never crated Bella and so far she has been a very good girl being left alone. I use to put her in a room with a gate up but I found that she cried because she wants to be with my other dog which is a cocker spaniel. Both do very well together alone. The only thing she has eaten is a hole in my couch in which she tore out all the stuffing. After that incident she never touched another thing, thank god lol.

This girl can't be trusted!

We used to keep Lucy in the Bathroom because my DH didn't like crates (no good place to put it, he didn't want a "giant" crate in our apartment), but after 9 months of keeping her in the bathroom, she tore it up! So now she is crated when we are not home. She sleeps in our bedroom at night, latley she has been sleeping under the bed.

I think she likes her crate better than the bathroom. She can see the whole living room, dining room, and the front door from her crate. She hops right in without coaxing.

I voted no, but my boxers don't roam exactly, they are in the kitchen with the crate open if I am out :)

Balboa still can't be trusted so he is crated while we are at work. Give him 5 minutes alone and he'll have something messed up or tore up. Thank goodness it has never been anything major.

Sally started out being crated but showed that she could be trusted. She still sleeps in her crate at night but with the door open.

I crate until they can be trusted. Never crated at night. They sleep in the bedroom on the dog beds and never get into anything. Once they can be trusted in the house, I don't crate anymore. I have a 6 year old dog that hasn't been crated since he was about 10 mos. old. We got Casey at 1 year old and the former owner told us that he tears things up. He was also not crate trained. It took about 6 mos., but he is totally crate free now and is a perfect angel (I think).

When I first got ABBY, I went out and bought her a crate, but I soon learned that I made huge mistake by doing so. She raised such a fit anytime I put her in it. I finally took it out to the Humane Society and gave it to them
