Hi everyone. Im the very proud owner of Sgt. Wrinkles (Sarge), a 9 week old purebred. I got him at 7 weeks of age from a litter whose family was moving out of state. He had a slight cough at that time, which was on a Saturday evening. I took him to the vet on Monday morning for his puppy shots and to have the cough checked. He was put on an antibiotic. After a week, he still sounded very fluid to me and so we went back to the vet. He had a chest xray and was found to have a slight case of pneumonia. This was scary to me since we lost a mutt puppy to pneumonia back in the spring. Sarge has bounced back pretty well, he's eating and drinking well, is playful and alert. I worry though because he still seems so congested. Its almost as though he just doesnt have the capablility to expel whatever is in him. Are boxers prone to respiratory problems? This is my first experience with one. I'm absolutely 100% head over heals in love with this little guy. I'm hoping that its just a matter of time until the coughing resolves itself. Anyone else experience this? Thanks everyone.

Congrats on your new pup!!

I'm glad he seems to be feeling better. Has he had all of the antibiotics? It's very important to give him amount prescribed. If he has finished the medicine and you think he's still sounding congested, I would encourage you to take him back to the vet. He may need another round of antibiotics.

Good luck & keep us posted.

Karen, thanks for the message. Sarge has about another weeks worth of antibiotic. Today was his best day so far, still stuffy but much better. I'll certainly be sure he completes his prescription. I'll planning on taking him back in a week to get a clean bill of health (hopefully). He's spending his day driving our 4 year old poodle crazy so I think he is feeling pretty good. Gosh, he's cute lol. Have a great day.

Having him sleep with a vaporizer will also help. If you don't have one, put him in the bathroom and run a really hot shower and the steam will also help break it all up! Best of luck and keep us posted.

I had the same thing with my puppy. He had pneumiona really bad and had discharge from his nose constantly. He was on two antibiotics for two weeks before things got better. He is okay now, just seems to sneeze more then other dogs. I think that might be a common after affect though. Rocky had the discharge because boxers tend to have more sinus problems because of the squishy face. That took the longest to clean up, we were wiping snot forever it seemed!!!! But you baby should handle this no problem. Good luck!!

thanks for the replies. Sarge is doing really well this weekend. I have had him in the bathroom with the steam and that helped for hours at a time. The runny nose is pretty gross but after being a mom for ten years, nothing that I haven't seen on a non-furry nose lol. Naptimes and early morning seem to be his roughest times with the residual coughing. I'm the same way when I have a cough. I appreciate all the kind words and advice. Sarge has another weeks worth of antibiotic left and when he is done, I'm planning on taking him back to have him checked and his lungs listened to. I am fortunate to have very accessible vets at the pet hospital. They seem to be as smitten with this pup as I am. I never knew how much people in general love boxers, all I hear is positive. I think this is the breed I'll stick with for life.
