Boxer Buddy
Ok everyone, sorry for the length of this post, but i'm going crazy!

Jackson is SICK, and i have no clue what's wrong... i'm really worried about him!!!!!

The first thing I need to mention is that he accidentally swallowed a couple (1-3 maybe? 200 mg each) Advil on Saturday night when my husband dropped them on the floor... I called Poison Control and they told me it shouldn't be a problem b/c he's about 60 lbs, but just to watch him closely for any weird behavior...

Well, he was totally fine, runnning around, happy, etc on Sat night, Sun, Mon... then on Tues AM he started this weird throwing up thing.. I was at work, but when I came home (nobody was there) he had thrown up EVERYWHERE>>> and then he threw up like 10 more times tues night... now of course that is not normal, but I thought maybe he just had a sour stomach and he would be fine after he got it all out... (like he ate something outside, etc. But then, and this is the weird thing, he became sooooo sick... like just laying around, very lethargic... scary... he wouldn't even move off the couch when my cats went right up to him to taunt him... and he didn't want to play or anything... he wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink, just kept throwing up... so of course i rushed him to the vet yesterday AM and he was there all day- at first they thought he might have a bowel obstruction from eating a toy or something, but they did x-rays and couldn't see anything.. they
gave him some meds to settle his stomach, and some IV fluids to hydrate him...

He didn't throw up anymore, but he just layed there and didn't move. They told me to come get him last night and just to watch him, because they thought it was probably just a tummy ache too... He's gone to the bathroom several times, and although there's not very much (b/c he's not eating), it isn't diarrhea...

He layed around all last night, and woke me up gagging like 5-6 times through
the night before he finally threw up again this morning... WHAT IS UP?!??!?! I
took him back to the vet this AM on my way to work again, and now they are going to do bloodwork to check on... pancreatitis? etc? Could this all be from that Advil?? He's so big that the posion control said that it shouldn't have
really affected him... but i just don't know.. MY BABY!!! I feel like my heart
is being ripped out... (a little dramatic, i know... but not really??? I feel so
helpless... I just wish i knew what was wrong...)

Does anyone have any thoughts on this???

Did your vet run any labs during the first visit? My first thought was liver issue, but pancreatitis is also a possiblity. Did you push on his abdomen at all? If so, was Jackson in pain? Ibuprofen can cause issues with both the liver and abdomen, but the incidence is VERY low in humans.

Keep us posted and I hope your boy is OK!

My Jessie got into some Ibuprofen - we are not sure how many - we thought it was less than 5. Her kidneys started to fail and we almost lost her. Ibuprofen can cause Kidney failure and stomach alcers. Please have the vet check her BUN and Creatinine levels ASAP!

I hope Jackson is feeling better soon.

Was he eating and such? Let us know. It should not be that bad, Max did this once and he was fine, in fact there was no side effects. There is something else going on.

go back to the vet NOW

I don't mean to scare you but this is what I found on ibuprofen, which is the class of drug that Advil is..

Ibuprofen should not be used unless recommended by your veterinarian.

Ibuprofen has a narrow therapeutic index in domestic small animals and very small changes in the dosage level can lead to toxicity.

Ibuprofen should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug, its components, or other NSAIDs.

Hepatopathy, renal failure, and GI ulceration/perforation have been reported in dogs and cats treated with ibuprofen. Cats are estimated to be twice as sensitive to the toxic effects of ibuprofen because of their limited ability to form glucuronides.

Signs of impending toxicity include reduced appetite, vomiting (+/- blood), black tarry stools, abdominal pain, dehydration, weakness, and lethargy. Blood loss from GI ulcers may cause anemia. Treatment of toxicity may involve intravenous fluids, activated charcoal (if given within 2 hours of ingestion), and blood transfusion if anemia is severe. Medications such as misoprotol (Ctotec®), sucralfate (Carafate®), cimetidine (Tagamet®) or famotidine (Pepcid®) can be given to treat gastric ulcers. Blood work is often necessary to evaluate hepatic and renal function before and after treatment of toxicity.

The recommended dose of ibuprofen is 5 to 8mg/kg in 12 hours. So if your dog weighed 60 lbs the MOST he should be given is 217 mg and this is only if he has no sensitivity to the drug.

Please print this if you can and have your vet check liver and kidney function for Jackson NOW.

Healing vibes!!!!

I've always heard ibuprofen was toxic to dogs. Like was posted before, and it'll affect their kidneys/liver. But, since it was just two, maybe it won't affect him too badly. Please keep us posted on how he's doing.
