Hello,

I really need some advice from anybody out there who knows diseases. My vets are even stumped at what is happening to Casey, my 8 year old female boxer. Please help me if you can!!!!

A few months ago, Casey began drinking lots of water. Now, we are not talking about a bowl or 2, but how about 5 gallons??? She also could not control her urine, and would even wet herself when she slept. I took her to the vet, and they did a senior profile on her, and found everything to be normal, except her liver enzymes were elavated. They had me put her on Actigall, for gall stones, for about a month. Casey seemed to get better.

Casey loved to be outside. Well, one day, I noticed a horrible large bright pink sore on her leg, about 5 inches across. It just come out of nowhere. When I took her to the vet, we were told she had a nasty staph infection, and gave me Cipro to treat it. They also tested for Cushings, but the first test came back negative, so they ruled that out. Everything else was normal, she was not diabetic, but she was a little hypothyroid. I was given thyroid medicine to give her, and was told to limit her water intake.

Now, 2 weeks later, Casey is on her death bed. She has lost tons of weight, has droopy eyelids full of pus, cannot control her jowls(she NEVER drools), is covered with staph infections on her feet, and on her side, has trouble breathing, is mentally disoriented, urinates on herself, staggers all over the place, and has what appears to be a cancerous growth on her side. She is very listless, and still urinates plenty, even though she is not drinking as much. Could this be symtoms of diabetes insipidus, or cancer??? As of yet, she has NOT been tested for diabetes insipidus, but the vets thought it was probably liver cancer. Casey is a skeleton of her normal self, and rolls her eyes back in her head. She pants all of the time, and appears to be dehydrated. I looked all over the Web for any info on diabetes insipidus, but they do not give any info about it.

I do not know what to do. I can take her back to the vet, which I am going to do tomorrow(if she lives), but need some help with this. What bothers me most is if she is suffering or not, and if she can be treated. Today she laid by me, and was panting very hard. She had to be coaxed outside to urinate, and then she staggered down the steps. I have never had a boxer die yet, and do not know what cancer can do, but I do not want her to suffer if she is in pain. It breaks my heart, as I think that she will be gone in just a few days, if not tonight. Whatever she has, it has occurred very rapidly in the last 2 weeks, and the staph is spreading all over her body. She was fine at her weight 2 weeks ago, but now is very thin. And, what bothers me is her eyes. They droop, and she has a hard time keeping them open. I noticed the droopy eyes yesterday, as if it just happened overnight.

If she has diabetes insipidus, I know that can be cured. But, what about the cancer??? Should I let her live out her life, on pain meds, or, God help me, put her to sleep??? My question is that I do not know if she is suffering or not. She does not eat that much, but never did, although I can get her to gulp down hotdogs. She will not eat dog food or anything else.

Please give me advice, as I am very upset!!!! If any of you has had experience with diabetes insipidus or cancer, tell me how you have dealt with it. I know it is hard, but if she has cancer, I do not want her to go through any painful chemo and suffer more.

Please send healing vibes to my Casey!!!!!!!!!!!

I am soo soo sorry to hear about Casey. I am sending healing vibes her way.

I do not know a lot about DI in dogs, but I know a little about it in humans. I am a nurse, and a drug that we have used occasionally to stop the diureses (excessive urinating) is called DDAVP. I'm not sure about the dosage, but I do know that it works for humans until the cause can be figured out. It is caused by the pituitary gland (which is in the brain) not secreting enough ADH (anti-diuretic hormone). I know in humans this is caused by swelling (either blood in the brain or can be caused by a tumor). If your dog has liver cancer, maybe it spread either from the liver or from the brain to the liver? In our patients with DI, we never limit fluid intake, we always make sure there is plenty of fluid or they will become dehydrated. I don't know if this will help or not.

I'm so sorry about your Casey, and I hope that they're able to get her the care that she needs from what ever is causing it. My prayers are with you.

The droopy eyes sounds like she is dehydrated. Is there an emergency vet in your town? I would get her there asap as it sounds very bad for her. Eight years is young for a Boxer but if she is deteriorating this fast I can't understand why your vet didn't keep her so they could monitor her more closely. Good luck!!

Thanks So Much for Your Caring!!!!!

Hi,
I cannot believe this, I have just posted this thread, and already everybody is offering me advice and caring!!!! I really appreciate it, as this is very difficult for me, but it helps to have others who care and understand!!!

I have been looking on the internet, and believe that Casey has one of two diseases, either diabetes insipidus or chronic hepatic failure. Thank you mia625, for your information, I am a pharmacist and work with several patients, it was very helpful that you told me about the water intake. I just gave Casey a HUGE bowl of water to drink, I, like PearlyWhirly, think that Casey is severely dehydrated, in fact, last week, I called the vet and asked. Usually, when an animal is dehydrated, you pull up their skin, and it does not snap back. It just hangs there. The vet told me that it was probably something else, even when I told him I believed she was dehydrated. He still told me to limit the water intake!!!!!!!!!!

I am taking off of work tomorrow, and taking Casey to the vet bright and early. We do not have an emergency vet, unfortunately. I am going to request that they admit her to the hospital, and start her on IV fluids immediately!!!! I do NOT know why they did not keep her for observation, at the time, she was doing okay and was getting around much better. She has just deteriorated this weekend, but I am going to give her as much water as I can, and try to feed her anything she wants!!!!!

Hopefully, your prayers and thoughts will keep her alive tonight. Thank you so much for your caring and concern, I really love all you people at Boxer World!!!!!!!!!

I am praying for you and your Casey, and sending tons of healing thoughts and vibes. Hopefully she will be OK during the night and you can have her in to the vet first thing in the morning. Is there another vet who could take a look at her? - a second opinion is something you might consider. I feel for you and know you must be frantic. Please keep us posted - we care.

I am hoping and praying for you and Casey and that you find out what is going on in time. It sounds as though you need to find another vet if possible. Even if you like your current vet and agree with them, sometimes a set of fresh eyes is all it takes. Does your vet not have an emergency number? We don't have any emergency vets here but my vet will come in at anytime for a fee.
I agree that she at least needs some fluids. I would get here there asap as already planned. I will pray for both of you and hope that Miss Casey has a good night.

Im so sorry to hear you and Casey are going through this.

IMHO I would definately be getting a second opinion and fast. It sounds like your vet may be either A just careless or B doesnt want the hassle. I mean if she is as bad as it sounds, why didnt they get her on IV fluids? It doesnt make sense.

You also said she hasnt been tested for Diabetes yet. Why havent they done that?

I hope you get on top of this before its too late, I would hate for you to lose her.

Please keep us posted
