we had the same problem with cassius; however we ended up fixing it by not doing anything to the food, but to our behavior. I read the Dog Listener and there is a whole chapter about a dog who wont eat. She felt the reason was because the dog didnt see his owners eating and therefore did not want to eat the "house" food. She suggested eating a cracker or something like that right before putting down the food, in the sight of the dog.
Though skeptical, we tried and, lo and behold, it WORKED! Cassius started eating with a week of doing this. We probably did it for about a month or so and now he eats with no problems what we set down for him that doesnt mean he doesnt try for some ice cream when we're eating dessert!
