I did not witness this in person, but heard of a bitch who collected the scent articles in the obedience ring, gathered them together, and lay down with them while the judge and the crowd laughed (and the owner turned red).

I've heard that an intact female, if not bred, will pretty much have a false pregnancy every time. Unless you have the bitch sonogrammed or x-rayed, there really is no way to tell if there are puppies until the pregnancy is more than halfway through.

Of course if there's any question that the bitch MIGHT have been bred, you could still have a pup.

A breeder friend just had a single puppy born to a bitch whose vet said she was in a false pregnancy. Surprise surprise surprise!

Doesn't take much to hide one puppy!

for the first few days anything that made a noise was HER BABY!

I happened to come upon this thread while doing a search on false pregnancy. Tessa is doing this same thing. My question is.... how far do I let it go? She is not only gathering all the squeaky toy's in the house but she being protective of them. Poor Tugg just thinks she's playing keep away until she snaps at him. Then he walks around the house very upset. DH thinks we should take away all the squeaky toy's in the house until she gets through this but when we do the poor girl seems so distraught. She also hasn't been eating at all. Is that normal? Any advise would be a life saver!!

PS. I am planning to have her spayed as soon as she makes it thought this. I really should have done it sooner.

my gsd just went through mastitis (false pregnancy) As result of that and over active hormones, she developed tumours in her tits.

Happened to my girl too!

My girl had a false pregnantcy too! I knew she had been acting a little funny for a while and had been licking her teets (i guess thats how you spell it?) all the time. We kept telling her to stop it. One Sunday i woke up and she had a huge tummor like swelling on her belly, it was about as large as a softball! It freaked me out so badly! I couldn't afford to take her to the emergency vet so I prayed a lot and took her first thing monday morning to her vet. He said she was having a false preg. and by licking her teets (she was milking herself!) she had cause some of her teets to become infected. The huge swelling was the infection which I had to drain a couple times a day. the vet gave her a shot of antibiotics and she had to take 4 pills a day for 10 days. It was such an ordeal! I had to take away all of her toys when she wasn't looking so that she wouldn't think they were her babies. And the vet told us to keep her from going under the bed or in the closet where she might think her "babies" were. Sorry this was kinnda gross but I couldn't belive it!

My vet told me the exact opposite when Heidi had her false pregnancy.

I was always told the exact opposite also. You are to allow them to have their "babies" and just play along with them otherwise it becomes a tramatic, stressful event for them. I was told that they get over it quicker if you allow them to have their little "family" until they feel the need to walk away from them.
