Boxer Buddy
I dont know what they are talking about when they say boxers are dumb. Creed is far from dumb. In fact I show off his smarts when people are over. They are amazed that he is so smart. It is true that he is stubborn. But when he is acting stubborn I try to think of something to get him to work, telling him to find his toy, he likes when I hide his toy in a blanket and he has to search for it, or putting my feet up on the coffee table and telling him under. He will go under my legs. He knows sit, down, roll over, speak, speak softer, gimme paw, bang (play dead), up, crawl, under, wipes his feet when he comes in from outside, plays fetch well, and knows bye bye, out, dinner, kisses, ride, walk. I know what you mean when you have to spell things. I wouldnt trade my baby for anything. He is such a smartie pants.
Like everyone is saying. Someone isnt taking any time with their boxer.

My Loki (waiting at the bridge) was goofy but, not dumb. I really think if a non-boxer lover would of had him they probably would have mistreated him. Some people are just too blind to see the great personalities these animals have. Both of my boxers were easy learners. Lacey...my female...will make you think she has to potty just so she can get you up out of her spot so she can get it.
Pretty smart thinking for a boxer. :)

My vet made the very eloquent statement the other day that "Boxers are VERY intelligent dogs - but they sure know how to hide it" LOL

He meant that, being such clowns, lots of people think they're not terribly bright.. but they're way wrong.

How is this for dumb:

Elmo always happens to have the exact toy that Tyra wants. Tyra goes to the toy box and picks out any toy and parades around the house with it in her mouth. Elmo then sees this, drops his toy, and takes off after Tyra. Tyra drops the toy and makes a mad dash back to the toy Elmo had, the one she originally wanted.:D

Boxers are natural clowns and will do silly things to amuse you and themselves. I don't think that's a sign of mental impairment but rather a hallmark of intelligence. They can be extremely creative and my guy learned how to hold his nylabones with his paws and lower legs while laying on his back to chew. That under bite can be a handicapp with chewing but not for this little guy.

I know what you mean! My parents are the same way! They think that a dog is "dumb" if it won't do what you tell it to... Even repeatedly.

I'm not sure how having a mind of their own could possibly be misconstrued as being "dumb"! :p

I would have to say, my Boxer is far from dumb. Mine opens doors, refrigerators, and cabinets (if there are treats in them). Pickup on all the training I could throw at him (as long as I had a treats!)

My co-worker, who has a boxer, and I always get into discussions about how smart our pups are. Her vet actually says that "Boxers are not smart, they are just highly trainable." Well, most dogs are trainable - so being HIGHLY trainable must be good - right? Also, I've spoken with people who train dogs to be seeing eye dogs, and they say that sure, the german shepards and labs are great, but they have the most fun training the boxers. Sure, at first, they want to do their own thing, but when they get it, they really get it. They are the best trained seeing eye dogs once they get the hang of what they have to do. From my experiences with boxers - although stubborn, they are very intelligent. As long as they have an owner who is willing to work with them, their intelligence shines through. Look at it this way too, just as there are stupid people in the world, there are stupid dogs. But no boxers that I know ever fit into that category.
