Peeing in Crate

We have a 5 1/2 mos old male boxer that I keep in the crate while we are at work. We started coming home at lunch each day to let him out but found that he was peeing in his crate each day. After a while we wondered why we were coming home at lunch if he was going to pee in his crate no matter what. He has to be in there 8-9 hours per day. He is able to hold his bladder at night from about 9 at night to about 7 in morning - and he doesn't sleep in his kennel at night, he sleeps on our bed. My breeder says he needs to learn the discipline of holding his bladder during the day like he does at night. I put a fleece in his crate that seems to absorb the pee and have found a few times where he didn't pee on the fleece and just stayed away from the pee as best he could, so it seemed like it didn't matter whether or not there was something in the crate with him to absorb the pee. This is my first boxer. My last dog was a Lab and he seemed to get the crate thing pretty early on and was able to hold his bladder all day by this age. I hoping to get some advice or hear from people who have had similiar experiences. One more thing, he is doing great as far as the not peeing/pooping in the house. This only happens sometimes when we don't see him go to the door or hear him cry out, so it is usually our fault.

What type of flooring do you keep the crate on? I've noticed that Xena only pees in her crate when she gets cold. I can't put anything in her crate to keep her warm because she chews and I get paranoid so I only keep toys in her crate. Instead of putting a blanket inside the crate, I put it under so it's still insulated from the cold ceramic floor.

The crate is on nice thick wall to wall carpet, so I know he is not cold although the crate floor is steel and that may get cold. But again, he has his fleece which he loves to lie on, of course except when he has peed on it, and then he pushes it away and lies on the crate floor. Given that he is only 5 mos old, it makes it difficult to know if it related to his age or his behavior. It seems like since he goes all night long without peeing, he should be able to hold it during the day.

Have you divided the crate off so he only has enough room to turn around? Also, are you removing the items that he has peed on, its not good to put those items back in the crate as they will continue to pee on it.

I am washing everything in hot water daily. I talked to my breeder who still has two female puppies from the same litter , and she is experiencing the same thing and says they will eventually grow out of it. I guess I will just have to wait it out. I could probably partition the crate off a little to make it a little bit smaller (maybe 6 inches), however he is in there so long I don't want him to be miserable and I'm not sure it would make that much difference.

5 month old male peeing crate all of a sudden

We have a 5 month old puppy also. Today my husband went home at lunch (which is what he always does) and Gable had peed in his crate. He is just getting over a bad bout of diarrhea. He is taking antibiotics for it. He had pooped in his crate last week (three days in a row) but I attributed that to the fact that he had severe diarrhea and cold not hold it. Before he got sick however he was in his crate for at least 4 hours at a time with NO accidents. Today he pees in his crate after only 3 1/2 hours. Gable has been "holding it" for 6 or more hours some days. He can hold it forever at night. Could this accident today be just a fluke or are we asking too much of him? Could the antibiotics make him have to go pee more often than usual? He has been a dream dog. I don't want him to unlearn all that he has learned over the last 2 1/2 months. HELP!

I would say partition the crate as much as you can. Just give him enough room to turn, not so much that he can walk back and forth. He more than likely will not pee where he has too lie, and if he only has enough room to lie they he should not pee there.

We have like a 42" crate for Jackson which is still too big (I thought he would be bigger). I used to partition it when he was smaller, but never had any problems with him going to the bathroom in there. So the partition is not in there and he doesn't go in there.
