Hi all. It was just Duff and me in our queen sized bed last night (and I do mean 'in'... I'm sure you all can relate) and I awoke this morning to find that he had peed IN the bed during the night. What's strange is, he was still laying asleep in the wet area! This is the third time this has occurred in oh, let's say 3-4 months. The first time, I wasn't even sure it was him- I just discovered the wet area eventually. Both the last time and this time, it occurred after we had been on a nice long walk down to the river, and he had tons to drink after we came home. Both times I let him out to pee as usual before we went to bed, and he peed FOREVER. It was like that scene in Austin Powers. :) The last time, he wet on the bed, and then peed all over the floor. I could see where he had walked around the bed, maybe trying to wake me? and then he gave up and peed a huge puddle at the foot of the bed. This time, I just awoke to the wet bed under him. I guess what's bothering me is that the first time he didn't bark or anything to signal he had to go, and even more than that, I find it highly strange that a dog would stay laying and sleeping in his own pee when he easily had the option to move!
Does anyone else find this a bit weird? He is otherwise healthy and fine, to my knowledge. He turned 2 in July so it's not like he's getting old and having incontinence problems from that.
Any input welcome...
Thanks, Karen & Duff

Hi.....ours does the same thing although I don't know if its because of the same reason. Diesle had very mild seizures very young (6mths) and has been on potassium bromide since (now almost 2yrs old). But since he has been on it he did the same thing....I would wake up in the morning and there was a wet spot on the bed still where he was laying.....He too is also very good about letting us know when he has to go to the bathroom, even late at night!....I asked the vet and she said to try and limit his water intake at night....just cut him off at a certain time....sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't......But I did notice that when he was still sleeping I would roll him over just to see what was going on and just the movement of his leg or the pressure on his bladder, I could see the pee just drip out....almost like he had a weak bladder or weak muscles....but knock on wood he hasn't done it in a LONG time and what has worked for me is to just take him out before I go to bed......which can be late for me sometimes, but if I do go to bed early, then I just make sure I take him out earlier in the morning.....really its still a hit and miss!!!.....I also noticed a bit of a pattern too though....if he has a really busy, exhausting day where he sleeps REALLY, REALLY hard I can almost bet that he will pee in his sleep and if I am home I will keep checking him while he is sleeping and if I start to feel anything, usually on him first, I make him get up and I'll take him out. For awhile we slept with plastic under our sheets.....lol.....thats love I got to say!!!!......that was after having to buy a new mattress because of that reason!!
Well good luck!!!!

Well, that might be a strange coincidence, now that you mention it... Duff had a seizure/fainting spell once at a very young age- 6m or so sounds about right, but I could look it up. He has never had another one that we know of, and is on no medication, but I wonder if he's having sleep-seizures or something? He lost control of his bladder and bowel during the first one.
It doesn't seem right though somehow... I'm just not sure it's not something else. Call it fur-mommy's intuition or something. Hmm. All I can say is, thank goodness we bought a protective, waterproof cover for our brand-new mattress!! Worth every penny!!

I have had a similar problem with my 1 year old boxer/dane mix.. whenever we go to the dogpark she drinks ALOT cuz she is running around.. and she has to pee every 10 minutes it seems like.. well she has on two occasions.. peed herself while she was sleeping.. i would imagine because she had to pee so bad? i dunno.. it only happens when she goes to the dog park and drinks tons of water

that is strange....diesle did have actually a seizure a lot younger...just a tiny puppy...although at the time I didn't know what it was..he was just soooo little and sitting on the couch and just fell over and peed involuntary, he never really looked like he completely went out that I saw, I had picked him up right a way and took him outside to pee and he was walking staggard like....weaving and tripping over his feet a bit....this was late at night and didn't have any idea what it was but he was fine by morning and it wasn't until he was 6ths old till it happened again except he was completely out for a few minutes...scared the crapt out of me!!...but that is when he was actually diagnosed.....I wonder if this is very common???....
Good move on the plastic covering for your bed though!

Boxer Insane
One of my dogs was diagnosed with epilepsy and her seizures most frequently happened when she was relaxed, quiet, or sleeping. Before her diagnosis of epilepsy, her neurologist ruled out the possibility that her seizures were cardiac or thyroid related. My other dog (now 13) has what I call REM espisodes (deep sleep with frequent dreams). During these episodes, he will appear to be running; will get very vocal; and will sometimes dribble urine. When he was younger, I would occasionally find that he voided full force in his sleep. If you are concerned, don't hesitate to consult with your vet. Hope Duff's problem resolves itself real soon - Cathy

Dribbling Boxer

Is your boxer a neutered male. Ours is and dribbling is a sign of incontinence. Their Sphinxter muscle wear the urine comes out is weak. Wetting while sleeping is not normal or being lazy. contact your vet. Our boxer has been doing it for 3 months. It is a result from neutering a male. It usually only happens to fixed females, very rare in male dogs

mine is a neutered male......I had checked with his vet also and they really didn't say much except to cut off the water intake at a particular time before bed. His happens so inconsistantly though that its not ALWAYS a problem....like now, he hasn't done it in months (knock on wood :) ). What is intaled for a weak sphinxter muscle?

It might be a good idea to see your vet "just in case". We have a male in rescue that does this and it's a symptom of his kidney problems. :-( I hope that isn't it, but better to have it checked than let it slide and get worse. Our guy is on meds for this and he doesn't pee the bed at night when taking the meds.

Good luck, I hope it's just puppy incontinence.
