Hi All
My boy Conker is on pain med for something in his back. The vet gave him a perfusion on Thursday evening and we noticed Conker was drinking soooo much. We also noticed when he well and truly wet his bed ....
He's been on pain pills since then and he's drinking constantly AND we're waking up every morning to a huge puddle on the floor. It must be related but wouldn't mind confirmation ( bit wierd that my vet didn't say anything to warn us ).
Would it do any harm to only leave him a bit of water at night ? ( he's off his pills soon anyway ). I'm a bit fed up of cleaning up puddles of widdle early morning .... Plus I'm a bit worried he's getting into a bad habit of not waiting to be put outside to go. Should I tell him off ? Can't leave him to sleep outside, he barks at night. Don't fancy leaving my door open for him to go out during the night - rough area plus cold mornings now here in France.

Is your furbaby on prednisone and/or receive any steroids for his back problem? If so, that can cause temporary excessive thirst and peeing. I would check in with your vet just to be sure. Hope Conker feels better soon - Cathy

The pred will also increase hunger. When Austin was on it he was scratching at his food bowl in the middle of the day, and also drinking ALOT.

Please don't withhold the water - discuss the issue with your vet. Thirst is definitely a side effect of steroid use.

If his body is craving water, it may be necessary for his kidneys to function, and denying it would not only make him uncomfortable but create other problems.

Don't worry about the bad habit -- he can't help it and probably feels bad about it. Boxers like to be clean.

Soon he will be off the medicine and life will get back to normal!
