Outside tempatures...what's too hot/cold

I know Boxers are sensative to the cold and to the heat. What are the tempatures that I should be really concerned about. Especially in the summer?

Koda baffels me because sometimes he hates to go outside when it's not that cold (temp is in the 30's) and other times he loves it outside (especially at night) and it's what I would consider too cold for him to stay out for a long period of time (temp running in the 20's). :confused: He'll want out, I let him out and after I think he should come in, he refuses and is out playing with the icicles or whatever else. So I leave him out there to play and he usually will come in when he's ready, but I worry that he's getting too cold, because he doesn't like to wear his coat when he's just going in the backyard.

We are getting ready to go up to my parents cabin and this will be his first experience with deep snow and very cold tempatures. The temps can dip down to the teens easily at night. The very little snow we have had here he's loved it, but up there is 4 feet of snow and I don't want him getting to awfully cold from playing in it. Worry, Worry, Worry!:rolleyes:

Now summer is coming (well in a few months anyways) and this will be our first summer with him and I know they are very sensative to the heat. So I just want to make sure that he doesn't get too hot.

I am being paranoid I know but if you all have some info on what's too hot and too cold that would be great.

A long time breeder told me this: Stand naked outside. If you are comfortable, then your Boxer is confortable.

Just don't let the neighbors see you

Our breeder has lots of snow in the winter where she lives and her dogs are used to playing in it. Im pretty sure she will put a coat on the dogs if its too cold. (its 40's-50's here and i will put a sweater on mine) You may want to do that, even if your pup seems comfy. As to heat, it was in the 100's (or close to it) most of our summer... dogs got real lethargic in the day, so we took lots of late walks, or early early morning (depending on what time i got up :D )

Although coldness isn't much of a concern here, it does get above 100F in the summer. I keep a constant supply of fresh water and let them play in the sprinklers; that seems to keep them happy.

Summers here are 80's, occasional 90.Not too bad but when it's humid, Ginger is tired during the day she saves her exercise for evenings. Winters can get very COLD. -25 F windchill at times. Then she is in & out for potty in record time. No outside playing. So far this winter hasn't been too bad here. But last year was horrible.

My silly wisdom tells me to let the dogs let me know when it's too cold or too hot... during cold weather, you can tell when they go out to do just what they need and want to come back in.

I guess the summer is harder to tell, but if you had to leave them outside for work then I suggest a permanent shade shelter and lots of water and sprinklers would be great too...

My Chloe is a wee-bit of a baby when it comes to temperatures. If it's in the 50's, she's cold. It it's over 85, then she's too hot. LOL!
I think each dog varies, to some degree.

My husband makes jokes that Chloe is a pampered pooch, while he's outside working in all kinds of yucky weather, she's inside soaking up the warmth or air conditioner. LOL! He says the dog has it better than he does.

I was coming outside from a restaurant today, and there was this georgeous fawn boxer handing out the window of this truck. Now mind you it's only 19 degrees right now, pretty cold. The owner had the window all the way rolled down and she was shivering. I went over and petted her for awhile but I wasn't sure what store the owner was in and it had already been about 10 mintues and had to get back to work. But she was a sweetie.

I thought I was on track with that wisdom also Boo, put Koda usually does the opposite of what I think he'd be doing. Maybe the icicles he finds keeps him distracted from the cold. Silly boy, always makes me wonder what is going on in that head of his.

I am really looking forward to the summer and see how he does with the sprinklers. Our Dalmatian loves to play with the hose.

LOL---my Boxer kids are good. The yard is for them. My garden has a small fence around it and they know to leave it alone. While they have back area to romp in, I have a large covered patio that is walled in on 3 sides. I have 2 Dogiloos with several polyester fleece blankets inside. One of the dog houses even has plastic insultation flaps like you see at supermarkets. My fences are all tall and sturdy. We raised them when we first brought Crystal home.

The backyard is 90% covered by a huge tree. Over the years it has been trained to spread over the entire yard. We have packed dirt which we refill on occasion. It all stays cool in the summer and does not freeze in the winter. When it rains, I close the gate to the back area and the kids stay in the patio area.

But on those awful winter days of cold and rain, and those insanely hot days of summer, I will leave my Boxers loose in my house. I have done that lately with the awful weather we have been having.

I am blessed to have very well behaved Boxers. As long as I give them their doggy space and their doggy toys, they leave my toys alone. They never destroy anything inside or outside my house.

And for the record, I do not consider digging the occasional hole in the middle of my yard as destruction. It does not happen often, but I am sure they had a blast digging it
