Out of curiosity!

For those that show here (I`m fairly new to this board but I do recognize some names) just out of curiosty with the standard changing with the ear cropping. Will you continue to show cropped or will you try the natural look?

I one day would like to get back in the ring (a newbie) and had consider trying another breed because of the ear cropping. Now I am a little more entised to stay with the Boxer (even though I may still do the cropped version). Haven`t yet decided and just wondered what your plans are?

I will continue to crop. I like the look. It will take awhile for the uncropped look to catch on, but the judges will get there.

I'm done cropping -- picking up my puppy from a bitch I co-own in two weeks and won't crop him.

If nobody puts them out there, nothing will change. And too many of the uncropped specimens have really been substandard. Happily, there are some now that are just as good as most anything out there, and hopefully judges will begin to give them their due consideration.

I do prefer the cropped look most of the time, and I do want to continue to have the choice to do so, but I also agree that if no one puts uncropped Boxers out there, the judges will continue to overlook them. However, some ears would not look good left uncropped, and some of the ears would not stand (or be very difficult) if cropped. So, I'll look at it on a case-by-case basis.

Just in question? Would you be speaking of an ear that is (what I call) perky, where it tends to stand high and then fall over at the tip. And then Boxers that just have rather large ears?

Large ears...My Zeplin had rather large long ears as a pup and I wrapped them until he was a year old. They never stood correctly but not sure if it was the ear...my wrapping (which I have done several)...or the cut (I think too much may have been left in the lobe)...his ears seem heavy. Maybe if I would have had the vet do a more normal length cut instead of cutting as long as possible, they may have done better. NOT sure!

Partly the ear set, partly the ear leather - very thin or very thick ears are harder to get standing. And there are some pups I've seen whose ears practically cover their eyes - from the front, similar to the positioning of a Sheltie's ears (though very different ears themselves, of course). They are probably *not* good candidates to leave uncropped.

You mean will we try the uncropped look

My answer is no. I chose to crop my first Boxer for certain reasons that where not even show related. And as long as I have a qualified and capable vet to do the procedure, I plan to crop my future Boxers as wel as dock their tails and remove their dew claws.

And I plan to continue and love as if they were my own dear children

I have been wanting to know more about showing boxers and I was wondering if they actual will allow natural ear boxers to even compete with cropped ear boxers. What chance would one natural have against all the others in a group that are cropped? I do prefer natural. I personally don't think it's necessary to put the puppy through that but that's my opinion. I just love their sweet faces with those floppy ears! So does anyone know what someone could expect from showing a boxer with natural ears?

Yes, most judges will allow you to "compete" but won't consider an uncropped Boxer. The new standard is not yet official so as of right now, uncropped Boxers can still be excused due to ears (there are some judges known for doing this). Once the new standard is official, we won't have to worry about being excused due to ears but getting a fair look may still be hard for a while.
