I couldn't believe it, the 4 dog walkers I contacted all charged between $14 - $18 a day to walk and feed the dog - and puppy day care is $20 for half a day. Like I said, I love my dog - but $4800 a year for the dog to be walked and played with is a pretty big bill if you ask me!
Then perhaps after your research into this matter it would be better to wait until you situation is better - or look into another breed that might not have the demands of a Boxer. Not every breed is for every person :)

I have also been looking into some of the smaller breeds as a result of my working situation - I've been told that some smaller dogs can be litter trained so I'm looking into that as an option as well.

My youngest is in his kennel in the kitchen with the door open, (i am also in the kitchen) he is just lounging.. My older one is laying on her bed with some toys in the living room. I am home with these two all the time and i will say that 80% of the day they sleep. On a normal day my female (she 15 mos) will only potty three times. In the morning, after supper, and at night before bed. She does not need to go out during the day to pee.. My dogs normal active time is after my kids get home from school, we take our walks then and play out in the yard then. They are used to lounging during the day while i clean etc... So i guess my point is this... If you have to work, your are not missing much by not being home.. Except for some zzzz'sss...

Very well said and I couldn't agree more. I have 3 dogs and Jason and I both work full time. My dogs do not suffer because of this. It is a known fact that dogs sleep 80% of the day. Does this mean that we should leave them for 80% of the day, of course not, but it reinforces the fact that people who work full-time outside of the home CAN infact properly take care of an animal.

What exactly does the price of a dog walker or daycare have to do with the breed of dog you get?

I have a boxer and a boxer mix. Futunately I have the luxery of working close to home, so I can go home at lunch and let them out. There has been a rare time when I could not leave to take them out, and they were absolutely fine. Yes, they bother are over a year now, but this went on when they were babies too. Neither EVER had to be let out in the middle of the night, and if they had to, they could easily hold it for 8 hrs or longer.

Read the beginning of this thread and you will see what the real issues have been :)

Daycare and a Dog Walker were options offered but rejected because of cost.

Pawprint - while cost is an issue - the REAL issues are 1) I am not comfortable letting a complete stranger in my home and 2) there is no puppy day care close to my home (there is one a few towns over but its only a half-day puppy daycare so that wouldn't help).

You mean having a home-check done by the breeder or rescue? Why is this out of the question?

Pawprint - I think johnson99 means having a complete stranger come into his home to walk the dog or let him out for a pee while he is at work.

Boxers are a high energy breed with high exercise demands. I think what Pawprint was getting at is perhaps a smaller, less active dog would suit johnson99's lifestyle better.
