We have a 7 month old fawn that one testical did not drop. What health issues or conditions should we be aware of? Should he be nutered, and when?

Yes he should be neutered. The surgery is more involved than with a typical castration. Depending on where the testicle is your may need to go into the abdomen to remove it. Retained testicles are more likely to become cancerous in later years so it is best to get it out.

Hi Atti -

A cryptorchid male does need to be neutered, most definitely. A retained testicle has a very high chance of turning cancerous, and at 7 months of age, his testicle is not going to ever drop. Here are a few threads I pulled up, doing a simple search.

Thanks!
With that in mind and the surgery being more in depth. The owners of Atticus's (my boxer) parents dont want us to get him nutered. Plus we paid 700 for him when we bought him should we go to owners for compensation for the nutering? The reason I ask is there have been some that say Yes I should ask them to pay.
What do ya think??

Compensation for what, exactly? It's so very much in the dog's best interests (healthwise) to be neutered irrespective of whether he's cryptorchid or not, that it should be done anyway. I guess you could ask for the extra $20 or so that it's going to cost you for the more involved neutering... but that's being just a bit cheap, don't you think? Unless his father was also a cryptorchid, then it's not as if it's a condition that the breeder could control ;)

Sorry for not following the rules I think I got it taken care of. My short term memory is not so good Sorry!!!

Yes I think it is cheap as well, like I said there have been some people saying we were sold a faulty dog. I dont think so we think he is the best boxer out there. I am looking for advise on the whole situation I want what is best for Atti. The previous owners dont want us to nuter him, they say that it is fine and there wont be any problems. Being a first time dog owner we are looking for the best advise and the sorce we currently have (the previous owners) are the only ones saying not to nuter.

Regardless of what the previous owners want, he is YOUR dog and it is in his best interest ( and yours) - health wise to get him neutered. They are not the ones who will be there to deal with his health issues should they develop later in life if you don't neuter him. Incidently, did they give you a reason why they don't want him neutered - surely not for breeding purposes.

Well the previous owners are flat out wrong about their not being any problems, not to mention owning an intact dog has its own drawbacks as far as marking, possible male aggression, accidental breedings, which would only furhter his crytorchid problem. The retained testicle is at a MUCH higher risk of cancer due to the body heat by being retained. Not only that but buying a dog comes with it's costs, such as neutering. That is a standard pet cost and not something that has to be covered by the breeder. Not to mention you got your puppy for a song, if the breeders did the appropriate health testing, which costs a lot of money. If they didn't then you paid too much and bought a BYB puppy and should neuter him regardless, even if he had both testicles, as his breeding line hasn't been checked for inherited diseases. It is in HIS best interest to neuter him and you weren't sold a "faulty" dog. Dogs aren't perfect and people aren't perfect but you should be careful of the source you buy from. Since cryptorchidism is an inherited trait, he should never be bred anyway, even if he was from champion lines with all of the health testing in place. He should be neutered and it is for yours and his best interests.
