Hello, my name is Yvette and our family is stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany. This is my first time writing and I am sad to be writing about a loss. On March 27, 2001 we bought a brindle boxer puppy and named her Jehnna. We also have a fawn named Molly. About two days with us Jehnna became sick and when we took her to the vet we found out she had Parvo. Although with us a short time we were very attached and are feeling a great loss. She was put to sleep on April 9, 2001 the suffering was just too much. We now have a problem with Molly. She seems to be showing the same symptoms. Vomiting, loss of appetite, loose stool and weakness. We give her water through a syringe and spoon feed her but she later throws it up. We are waiting for the results of the blood test to see if it is Parvo. We just don't know what to do. The breeder tells us it is something in our home that has caused this but I was informed that there is a gestation period of eight days. This means they were already contaminated when we got them. I am at a loss. Can anyone offer advice. Our family would appreciate it very much.

So sorry to hear of your loss, you must be heartbroken.

Are both the pups littermates? It sounds like they came to you with it. Could you possibly contact the owners of the other puppies to see if their pups are displaying the same symptoms?

I am not too well up on parvo but here in the UK they are immunised against it(along with their other inoculations) at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. Shouldn't they have had antibodies from their Mum or wasn't she vaccinated for parvo.

My thoughts and prayers are with you for Mollie.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of Jehnna. Your family and Molly are in our thoughts and prayers, we hope Molly can pull out of this. Big boxer hugs and kisses from Tiger.

Yvette,

How tragic. I'm so sorry for your loss and that your dog is now showing signs of illness.

Please take your remaining dog to the vet immediately and see if you can treat her. Some dogs have been treated successfully for Parvo. So, it is not a lost cause just yet.

It sounds to me as if the mother was not protected from Parvo and that the pups therefore didn't get any immunes from their mother. I truly doubt there was anything in your house to give these pups Parvo. It had to have come from the breeder. Try and find other owners of the pups and see if they are having similar problems. If so, you could all get together and force the breeder to make things right. I would think that any responsible breeder would want to make SURE his dogs were healthy and that any dog he sold was as healthy as possible. See if you can check further on this breeder and find out if there have been problems in the past as well.

Good luck. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss and the pain you are going through now. My thoughts are with you.

I have received one reply...

"Our experience is to get the pet hydrated asap and in a vet facility so that fluids and nutrients can be iv’d immediately. If you can catch this right away and the dog is not immune suppressed from other diseases, they can make it through...it is not cheap but proper vet care is mandatory."

I will pass any more along.

I'm so sorry...

I am truly sorry to hear about your loss...I can't help though and be suspicious of the circumstances regarding your two pups. If I were you I would really take a close look at the breeder...something tells me they aren't on the up and up...I had a similar experience in Wiespaden, Germany many years ago and will never forget it. It was heartbreaking and tragic and the language barrier made it much worse for me. In a nutshell, I bought a cocker spaniel from a breeder and within two weeks he died of Parvo. The vet could do nothing for him. My husband and I went back to the breeder quite upset about the loss of our puppy and asked whyyyyy???? The breeder was quite indignant and rude and told us basically "too bad". My husband and I returned with a friend who spoke fluent German and demanded an explanation. He gave in finally by offering us another pup...He gave us directions to the place where the pups were kept, and for the first time I was witnessing a true PUPPY MILL. It was terrible but I was so naive at the time I purchased yet another pup from this place...Within weeks, this beautiful Cocker Spaniel turned vicious and had bit my husband and me. It was a nightmare. Years later I am much more knowlegeable about Puppy Mills so I wonder whether this may be what you are dealing with. There are breeders out there who actually will buy their pups from Puppy mills and then put them in their home as a guise ...claiming they are true breeders. I have seen this many times over. It is a sad and disgusting practice. My advice to you is to really investigate this breeder. Parvo is "out there" but nowadays reputable breeders will insure against this awful illness.
My heart goes out to you, and I hope your other pup makes it through...take care, jicksies

We are so sorry about everything you are going through. When you got these puppies did you ask if there was a guarante on their health? SInce you didn't have these pups for a long period of time I would call the breeder you got them from and ask for a refund on them. This DOES NOT at all take away the heartache and pain you are going through with these puppies, but alot of breeders will give your money back. I don't about in Germany but I have heard that there is a law about selling sick puppies, even if the breeders didn't know they were sick. If a puppy gets sick then you are intitled to your money back.
In some cases parvo can be treated and the pup can go on living a healthy long life, but you need to get that vet to start them on a IV ASAP. This treatment is long and it does involve a IV but well worth it if it all works out for you.
I pray that you can save this pup my heart goes out for you please keep us posted.

I'm sorry about your loss but let me tell ya if your
waiting on bloodwork you got the wrong vet.
Your puppy should immediately be put on a IV and met-
clopramide for the vomiting. She should also be given
steroid inj And also did you tell this vet you had another
puppy at home? There is a preventive shot out there that
lowers the risk of the other pup. If your at home now
give the puppy pepto bismol 30 min prior to forcing
chicken broth, gator ade or pedialyte on your puppy, you
should give the pepto at least every 4 hrs. If you can
buy a iv bag from your local pharmacy do so Sodium chloride
it can be given subcu(under the skin on back of neck Like
a vacc)the most important thing is to keep her hydrated
and keep her warm God Bless you and good luck parvo
does not mean certain death it's a race against the clock
so don't waist anymore time
