Off to the emergency room

Last night we ended up in the emergency room. Usually Mason's allergies only flair up in the summer but yesterday when I got home from work the poor baby had hives all over and his eyes were swollen shut. Thank god he hadn't gone into anaphalatic (SP?) shock. I had come home for lunch around 3:00 to let him and the puppy out then went back to work. This type of thing has been happening since he was a pup so I immediately gave him 50mg of bennedryl (SP?) but it didn't help. I have him another 25mg 4 hours later but still the hives and swelling would not go down. ( He was breathing fine and playing so he wasn't critical). Over the last three years we have been to the emergency room seven or eight times not to mention the doggy dermatologist. But by 11:00pm none of the hives had disappeared and he was restless. Off we went in the middle of a snow storm. I can't imagine what in the world could've bitten him ( the dermatologist decided that the bad reactions like this one are most liekly due to bug bites) It is still winter here in Cleveland. Just wondering if any other boxer parents have had any experiences with allergies like this.

Clara hasn't had any allergies, so I don't have any advice. I hope your baby is doing better today!!

Just once. Daisy got bitten by something and started to break out into hives. She was playing fine and it didn't seem to bother her. About 11pm I got scared that if the swelling continued, she wouldn't be able to breath. So, off we go on what would normaly take about 45 minutes to an emergency vet. I made it in 25. Thank God the wife drives a 400hp Camaro SS!

It is just such a scary situation for us. The vets and specialists can't narrow it down and even if they could, what am I supposed to do put him in a bubble? Twice he has gone into the anaphalatic shock and I almost had to give him CPR as my husband did 100 mph to the ER. I think that my purchases of Benedryll keep that ocmpany in business LOL. Not only has this cost us a small fortune over the years but like yesterday, I was unware that he had been bitten (if that is what happened) and came home to find him a mess. We do alot of outdoor things ( I always have a first aid kit as he tends to be accident prone too) and normally I can catch it right away. The worst thing is that I've read that the steriod shots they have to give him when the benedryl won't work is terrible for his liver. He's only three and has had numerous shots and IV's of steriods:confused:

My boxer's havent had any allergic reactions yet (knock on wood) but I work in an emergency vet clinic and I have seen many come in all swollen up. They just look pathetic, but still happy as can be.

When they come in that swollen and covered in hives it is usually a spider bite. Another good reason I hate spiders!!! haha

Hope your baby is doing better today!!

Sailor has done this since he was a small pup. I took him to the emergency vet clinic the first time it happened, but he didn't really get any better from the trip. Now I just go ahead and give him the benedryl as soon as I notice hives, and swelling. He just had an episode last week, his head was swollen and he had hives all over his body. I started the benedryl and by the next morning he was fine. He is like yours, he still plays, drinks and eats so I just watch him and try to make him as comfortable as possible. I wish our babies didn't have to suffer like this:(

Capone has had this twice and I switch he to barf and it has never happen again. I have found out that he is allergery's to carrots and kelp to witch all dog food has carrots in it and most have kelp. I hope this helps. kathy

Yep, we've experienced it. Milo is severly allergic to all green plant life. Grass, bushes, weeds, trees, you name it. He get's allergy shots every three weeks. We had a hive break out about a month ago. We figure he ate something green that came up through the snow. Benydril did help, but I still worry. Even though he's so allergic, it doesn't stop him from eating green plant life!

Could Benadryl be like an antibiotic? I know that when you take antibiotics often enough, your body develops an immunity to it and so the doctor would have to prescribe another kind of antibiotic? Dont' really know, just a thought.

Zeus does have some sinus problems, though. I know that when it gets hot and muggy (living in Houston, I think 360 days out of the year are hot and muggy) he starts snorting. But then he's fine. And he's never worried me enough to warrant taking him to the vet. His little episodes happen for a few seconds several times a week, and then he's fine.
