Here in NZ it is said to be illegal to breed white (albino) boxers or breed FOR them. I do not know what regulations apply to other countries but is there someone out there from NZ or abroad who knows why this is? I would love a white boxer and have met a couple of beautiful animals that we have considered mating to our wee girl. Are there extra health risks/problems involved in having a white boxer or are they just not sought after? Colour doesnt mean a thing to me bu the white is just so beautiful

I can't speak much for New Zealand (others will do that). With regards to white Boxers, they do not meet the breed standard. Why would you breed something that the Boxer Breed Standard does not call for?

White Boxer are certainly more prone to deafness, among other issues.

That being said, you can certainly purchase a white Boxer and they make just as good pets as fawns and brindles - I love white Boxers, personally. But you should not breed them (it's unethical).

Good luck to you

Unethical (long)

Well, as the owner ofa beautiful white myself, i'll empart what limited knowledge i know.

White boxers, as any "white" animals, are more prone to deafness, blindness and other genetic disorders. They are not recognized by the breed standard and are thus unable to be registered (for breeding purposes). We can registered ours with the CKC but only on a limited reg. basically as a pet. They can show in obedience and agility but not in conformation (breed standard). A lot of breeders were known to put the whites down at birth due to the fact they cannot be bred/shown in conformation. Breeding two whites to get more whites increases the chance of genetic disorders.

However, many breeders are now keeping the white puppies to sell as pets, keeping in mind they shouldn't charge as much for a white one as a brindle or fawn. The biggest reasoning to not breed for white is that it violates the breed standard, they have an increased occurrance of blindness/deafness and thus it is unethical breeding.

Thus said, Konah and i are trainign for agility and obedience and we'll be working towards therapy when he gets a little older and more "calm" *L*. I love my white baby and wouldn't trade him for all the brindles or fawns in the world.

Erin and Konah bear, the sqwooshy face boo man

oh and he is healthy, no blindness, hears perfectly and is a robust 45 lbs at 5months.

Alidog - there are a multitude of very good reasons why white boxers should *never* be bred from, and it's primarily about genetically inheritable disorders. The main one is deafness - white boxers are significantly more prone to deafness (18% vs 4% when we're talking about deafness in both ears) than their coloured counterparts and deafness is genetically inheritable. That means that *any* puppies (including coloured) born from white dogs are more likely to be deaf than puppies born from coloured dogs, whether the white parent was deaf or not. It's just not responsible to deliberately breed a known genetic disorder into the breed. There is also the consideration that the white colour is not permitted by the boxer standard, and you shouldn't breed non-standard dogs but that is very much a secondary reason. The main consideration is health.

The following threads should give you all the information you need to understand this:
http://www.boxerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34760
http://www.boxerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49000

Please don't take that information as "anti-whites". It isn't, and this is an extremely white boxer-friendly website that has been "championing" the cause of white boxers for years. But the fact remains that these dogs should never be used for breeding. Heck, 90% of boxers should not be used for breeding. Trust me, the dog isn't going to mind - it is far better for their health and wellbeing never to be bred;)

And you don't need to breed white boxers to produce white boxers either. Depending on your part of the world, between 15-25% of all boxers born are white (they result from breeding flashy dogs). In NZ the percentage is around 20%. So by all means you should look out for a white puppy, they're by no means rare - but get one from a registered breeder, and one that had coloured parents.

Lastly, it is not illegal to breed white boxers in NZ, but it is certainly unethical and you'll never find a registered breeder there breeding whites (or at least, certainly not admitting to it). White puppies should be included in the registration of live births, but are inelligible to be shown.

As a white boxer owner myself, I had my boy neutered as soon as he was old enough to do so. His father was white and his mother was fawn, At the time i got him I had no idea about white boxers and the fact they arent recognized by the AKC. I paid 125.00 for him simply because I fell in love with him and to me it was worth it. Now that Im more educated about the boxer breed I see what these people were doing and it was wrong. They were backyard breeders trying to get white's to sell. I am very lucky that Tango is healthy. Things could have been worse. If your interested in white boxers I would suggest trying a boxer rescue place in NZ. See if you can save a poor soul that needs a home!

Another thing to remember is white boxers are more prone to cancer. Tango has had several small skin cancers removed ..so far none were anything to worry about but the odds are against him from birth due to his color. I love my boy and i'd not trade him for anything in this world.:)

I believe the white boxers are only more prone to SKIN cancer. I do not believe they are more prone to any other type of cancers than their colored counterparts. Even the fawns and brindles with large amounts of white on them can be more prone to skin cancer on those white areas. I have a white boxer and I put sunscreen on him when he is going to be out in the sun for a long period.

Thankyou all SO much for your help! I think the white boxer is a beautiful specimen but I had no idea how frowned upon breeding for white was. It is such a relief now that I know this about the white, and now that I know what to look out for in terms of a breeder and white dog.
Thankyou all for your help, I will keep you posted on how my search for the 'white' goes!

Hi Alidog,

I just wanted to let you know that we got Storm from a breeder in Christchurch who admitted to us she usually kills them at birth :(. I am sure this is NOT the practice of most NZ breeders but I am still yet to see another white boxer. It may be a good idea to let responsible breeders know you are looking for a white so they can let you know if one comes along. FYI Storm has no health problems so far - just requires sunscreen through summer.

Goodluck & keep me posted! We certainly get alot of comments on our beautiful (often called unusual) baby. :)
