To all that keep switching methods in a matter of days, weeks, etc...STOP. Teaching bite inhibition takes time, patience and consistency. Repetition is key. If you keep changing up methods you are going to confuse your pup and make the process longer. And I also agree with the others on NOT holding down or hugging your dog in order for this to stop - you are not teaching them anything. You need this mouthy time to teach them how to use their mouths properly and that human skin is fragile. If you just all out stop their biting, you are going to create a bigger problem down the line when their older and they have their adult teeth and they don't know how to use their mouths.

Here is a link to a few great articles regarding bite inhibition, puppy mouthing, etc..

This won't help right now but this will pass! LOL (I know it's not funny when you are being nipped at all the time!)

Raleigh did the same things, hung on our pant legs, nipped at our fingers, legs and even our backs....he was faster than a speeding bullet:) nothing worked really, we tried everything which got him even more excited so then we would just walk away from him, he followed of course:)

All I can say is try different things and I agree with the repitition of one way, it will pass!!!:) good luck to all who have litte devils doing this!

ehayes, thanks :) Haven't switched up the training methods, just have been trying to keep an open mind and looking at other options. I'm going to stay with the cry method still, but I'm not sure when to accept that it doesn't work for her. I mean, not all methods work for every pup.

Just so frustrated because like I said, I've never had a pup that bites this much! Must be that boxer attitude!

Read the articles that I post the link for. They'll give you varying options. You're exactly right, not all pups are created equal, but with a few minor changes in your approach, you can achieve the same result. Good luck.

They are frustrating, and teaching bite inhibition is hard work. But so worth it in the end! I was about ready to give up on Johann as a puppy.

Trust me, the first time you accidently hurt your adult boxer and they turn to snap(stepped on a sleeping Johann's back leg with heels on :( ) and you only get covered in slobber and not a single tooth mark, it will all be worth it.

Same goes for a kid stepping on them, pulling ears, foot slammed in car door, cutting naisl to short, etc. It is so crucial that puppies learn that humans are wimpy and fragile- and not to bite with any force at all.

touch game

So I have been training with daisy for a little while now with a game my uncle suggested I play with her called the "touch game" which he used on his bullmastiff puppy and rotwilier puppy.

Put a treat in one hand and the clicker in the other hand and let the pup try to get the treat out of your hand, this may take a while and hurt at first (depending on how bad your pup wants the treat) and as soon as they put thier nose to your hand to smell the treat with out biting click and give them a treat ! after a few tries daisy really got the idea and now she is almost a pro  so now she relises that if you nudge the hand you will get treats/loves and if you bite you get nothing.

I have been using the touch game in conjunction with telling her enough and moving said body part away when she acts too wild ! It has really been working =) so proud that I can now sit with her on the floor for a while and not get my face and hands biten off !!! still working on the pant leg and sock obsession  and the dang jumping is another issue still in the works!

The only down side is that she will now nudge my leg with her cold nose to get my attention and if i dont listen the first time she will keep doing it lol kind of annoying but I kind of like it as a communication aide.

It being summer here I wear lots of shorts and capries so a cold noes on the bare leg is kinda startling but its better than biting. I also give her an energy outlet ie: I just learned she is fascinated with playing fetch !!

I must say clicker training is amazing, I am glad I started to use it. I Just thought I would share our succsess as I continue to work with her. fiestaicon

I saw after you posted this somewhere, and tried it quick. No go. She automatically licks for the treat, doesn't even try to bite. Right now just using the method of saying "ouch" and turning away.

Reading this post gave me bigtime flashbacks of when Bodie was a little puppy. He did ALL of these things, the biting, the grabbing our ankles...UGH I don't know how we got thru it. At one point you couldn't even pet him without getting chewed on, and not in a friendly way! I had serious worries that he was going to turn out to be a mean vicious dog!

Honestly I had no idea that puppies could be so difficult and frustrating. All of the suggestions on here are great ones. I think we tried them all and found out that making sure he knew we were truly offended by what he did (oh and we really acted the part to the max), walking away and not even giving him eye contact for a few minutes he finally started getting the point that if he wanted to be near us and get attention he had to be nicer. It took a really long time tho, so I wish all of you good luck and patience. It does get better, Bodie is almost 8 months old now and even tho I never ever thought it would happen he's stopped being mouthy and rude and is such a sweet boy. Well at least today..but it's still early..
