Before my fiance and I got Teak he decided that we wouldn't let the puppy up on the couch, not even if we were sitting on there. Sooo fast forward about 4 weeks. My lil Teak is almost 10 weeks old and cute a a button, my fiance who has been in the field training has not met our lil furbaby since Teak came home. Teak was happily sleeping in his crate when my fiance and I came home and put things down and I let out our lil one and BOOM he goes straight to his daddy. The look on my fiances face was priceless as Teak was wagging his tail and kidney beaning like mad all over his feet. I so decided that since my fiance was watching Teak I could go put stuff up in our room and as I walk back into our living room low and behold who is on the couch... my fiance and Teak are snuggling. I just looked at them both and my fiance gave me a sheepish look because he knew he'd broke his own rule! So now teak has his own couch blanket that has to be on there before he's allowed up with us. Thank you all for humoring me on this story I now have to go rescue my folded laundry from my inquisitive boy.

ahhh... cute now, but cute at 60 to 70 lbs????

Just remember, it's harder to "re-instate" that rule than it is to just inforce it from the get go... My little girl LOVES to cuddle, but sit on the floor with her to do that, not on the couch. Others love their doggies to jump up on the coach... so it's a personal thing, but just keep in mind how big he will be on day.

Toby is already 70lbs and we had that rule too, as we have leather couches, but as all boxers they tend to own you, not you owning them. He has access to the couches, but we keep them covered. He's as much family as my human family and well, you know how that goes, rules are made to be broken :)

I wish I could help give a solution, but every dog I owned has had access to the couch. This includes our 110lb bullmastiff, so size hasn't ever been a concern for us.

Good luck saying no to his squishy face though :)

Yeah that was our rule too. I don't mind dogs on furniture but my mom said heck no that one. Well, when Juno was a little puppy.... it was my MOM who thought I was a meanie for making Juno lay on the floor!

So from then on she was allowed on the couch. 3 years later now, we just got a new couch this summer and the rule is back - no (big) dogs on the couch. So Juno has been kicked off but it really wasn't difficult. But she's used to it because I also kicked her off my bed after originally letting her sleep with me every night. It's easier to just enforce what you want right from the get go, but not impossible to change your mind when he's bigger.

I have to laugh at people who teach a dog not to get on the furniture. I can almost bet my house that the dog learns that when you are home, he isn't allowed on there, but as soon as you leave........they are snuggled up on it! LOL It smells like you, the couch and bed has the most scent of you. When you are gone, they will be drawn to your scent, it's how packs work. They know where they belong by the scent left by the pack.

Anyways, I'm usually the one kicked off the couch or bed cause they don't leave me much room! ahhaahha......seriously, teaching them "off" is good enough for me. Which is a command highly used in my house, since there is always 3 dogs on the couch or bed when i choose to use it. ;)

My husband has had this rule. I really didn't follow it. So for my dogs, it was no couch when DH was home! That was until Arabella came along! She has somehow managed to get him to break it. Our first boxer had her own chair. A previous owner had left an old vinyl club chair. We let Star have it. I was on the couch and my dh was in he recliner, and she had her own chair.

We did get a new leather sectional a couple years ago and it was special ordered to fit in a particluar space. That is the only sofa the are not allowed on. However this morning I had my wisdom teeth removed. I knew I was going to be groggy from being put under so I had the sofa made up with a quilt so I could come in a lay down, which I did. I landed on an antler and a warm spot. So someone was up and my guess is Arabella. Thor usually only gets up in the bed with me.

Many moons ago.....
When Cami came to live with us at 9 weeks of age my rule was NO dogs on the furniture.
Hubby agreed to it.
He thought that if she were on HIM and he was on the couch it wasn't breaking the rules. She wasn't technically ON the couch she was on him.
Whatever.....that was a long time ago and the couch is comfy so she was allowed on it whenever she wanted.
With Raine I knew she was going to be able to be on the furniture but my rule was she wasn't brought on to the couch by us. She didn't get furniture privileges until she was big enough to get up on her own and then safely down on her own.
It didn't take but a few days and she was leaping at full speed to make it on. Her little fat belly would act as a teeter-totter. Front feet on the couch and no feet on the ground.... and then 1/2 the time she would wiggle so much she would fall off. I remember so many times holding my breath thinking she was going to hurt herself!
Rules are meant to be broken and if a Boxer is involved they will figure out a way to get around them.
